He never went to school and he could not read or write.
He settled in Armstrong Co, Pa. and later in IL.
He fought throughout the Civil War and sustained a broken leg in
Chattanooga, TN when a cannon ball bounced off a fence post and hit his
leg. He served as a private and/or a Corporal in both

Co "E" 206th Reg't PA Vol
Some records say he was a corporal but his disability papers refer to
him as a Private.
It seems that John suffered a disability from the war and filed for
disability benefits later in life. Statements given in his behalf were
given by William Herrett (His father-in-law), Perscilla J. Herrett (His
sister-in-law) and Robert Jewart (he was most likely the father of
John's daughter-in-law the wife of William "Willie" Greer
Shetler )
John was married at least 4 times. AS far as we know he only had
children with Maria A. Herrett
#1 Maria A. Herrett
#2 Lucendia (Lousinda) Warren
#3 Julia Freeman
#4 Rachel Harris.
According to his granddaughter Florence Ethel Campbell "He was a
fine old man and fairly well to do financially".
He lived the last ten years of his life with his daughter Lucy Belle
Shetler Kern and her family.
