Star Trek Deep Space Nine started with a different approach. It was on a remote and old outpost called Terok Nor, which was later renamed to DS9. It became quite interesting in the first episode with the discovery of the wormhole. It later fell more into the lines of Star Trek when it got a Starship called the Defiant. It was extremely small, but nevertheless, it was a dangerous vessel.
The crew of the Bajoran station began running it as a federation outpost in 2369. There was a great discovery in the beginnings of the Station. Not to far away, they discovered the Bajoran wormhole that led to the Gamma Quadrant. The crew eventually got a Federation Starship called the Defiant that they used to find.
