We have lacked a flexible power-projection capability that leverages the advantages of space and space flight-programs like space-based laser and the space plane. A space-based laser will someday provide precision strike at the speed of light. It could potentially engage not only targets in space, but also targets in the air, on the ground, and on the sea. But we're not spending the dollars that we need to spend on that program. We kneel at the altar of the [Anti-Ballistic Missile] treaty, in spite of the fact that we know that the ABM treaty is restricting our ability to do what we need [sic] to do.GW (In other words, the ABM and Outer Space treaties prevent the US using space as a gunnery platform for global military rule.)

The facts are that the US Army, US Special Operations Command and CNN personnel confirmed to me that military personnel have been involved in news production at CNN's newsdesks. I found it simply astonishing. Of course CNN says these psyops personnel didn't decide anything, write news reports, etcetera. What else can they say. Maybe it's true, maybe not. The point is that these kind of close ties with the army are, in my view, completely unacceptable for any serious news organization. The commercial press, in another of its brazen hypocritical proclamations, points with pride to the fact that it is free because it upholds a free system in which there are two political parties. But there is probably not one member of the American Newspaper Publishers Association who does not know that the Republican and Democratic parties both feed out of the same bag provided by the monied system, and that the same persons frequently subscribe funds to both major parties. They know this very well, and they also know very well that the press has never given honest news coverage to the formation, platform and campaign of any third party which was independent enough not to feed on the same money. Instead, reporters misled the public and missed the real story: [I], my husband, and one volunteer took on the entire global AIDS establishment armed with only smiles and facts…[We were told, over and over again, that people had never heard of this before, never had had a chance to see this before, and we were greeted most enthusiastically by a variety of people]…I found that much noteworthy news from the conference went unmentioned…for example…protesters carrying signs that warned

A secret blueprint for US global domination reveals that President Bush and his cabinet were planning a premeditated attack on Iraq to secure 'regime change' even before he took power in January 2001.[RMN and CD mirroring SH Scotland Sunday Herald 2002 Sep 14] see PNAC for the PDF or NZS for a lighter HTML version. `The report was drafted for Dick Cheney, Don Rumsfeld, Jeb Bush, Paul Wolfowitz, and Lewis Libby, then Cheney's chief of staff, before the 2000 elections. Today, Cheney is Vice-President; Wolfowitz is Deputy Sec'y of Defence to Rumsfeld, Secretary of Defence. The invasion of Iraq, and control of the Arab Gulf region, is clearly defined as a central strategy in the report.' NZS · NZSThe blueprint, uncovered by the Sunday Herald, for the creation of a 'global Pax Americana' was drawn up for Dick Cheney (now vice-president), Donald Rumsfeld (defence secretary), Paul Wolfowitz (Rumsfeld's deputy), George W Bush's younger brother Jeb and Lewis Libby (Cheney's chief of staff). The document, entitled Rebuilding America's Defences: Strategies, Forces And Resources For A New Century, was written in September 2000 by the neo-conservative think-tank Project for the New American Century (PNAC).
The plan shows Bush's cabinet intended to take military control of the Gulf region whether or not Saddam Hussein was in power. It says: 'The US has for decades sought to play a more permanent role in Gulf regional security. While the unresolved conflict with Iraq provides the immediate justification, the need for a substantial American force presence in the Gulf transcends the issue of the regime of Saddam Hussein.' The PNAC document supports a 'blueprint for maintaining global US pre-eminence, precluding the rise of a great power rival, and shaping the international security order in line with American principles and interests'.

This becomes a widely disseminated theory.
This guy
doesn't buy it, but I don't find his arguments convincing. It seems based on
the idea that Iraq acting alone in switching to euros is supposed to be enough
to wreck the dollar. But the article doesn't claim that. The article adopts
the setting an example
idea that's used against Cuba. (Cuba is not
in itself a threat to the US. But the example it would set to Latin America, of
succeeding in and after shrugging off the US yoke, was a threat to the
US which had to be crushed swiftly. This is the true form of the infamous
domino theory.
)
He talks about Iraq's switch to euros as if it had not happened, and wouldn't
affect the US if it had. But the article claims Iraq had already made major
moves to the euro, and though it didn't kill the dollar in itself (obviously),
Iraq gained by the move—and other oil-bearing countries
would note that. Regardless of the grudges they may bear against the US, if
switching might be selfishly beneficial, why not do it?
And if Iraq made a success of selling oil in euros, so much greater the
threatening example. If a big US supplier like Venezuela kicked over the greenback traces, I'm convinced that would be a big risk to the
dollar; suddenly the US would have to have a ready supply of money which
it's not allowed to print.
His claim that such a move would just hurt other OPEC countries doesn't wash. Why not switch to euros too (unless the US prohibits it)? Why couldn't they change their reserves same as everyone else?
He has a couple of things right: exporters, including the EU and especially Japan and the rest of Asia, want a strong dollar
. Japan has already
(as of 2003)
been undercutting its own currency to keep the yen down re the dollar.
But the real question is how long will they be willing to do that?
Japan has (as of 2003) also made noises about being tired of it. And if they
have to buy their oil in euros…?
If this were the only risk to the dollar, I'd dismiss it. But the US has
made itself rather fragile. Once upon a time, it made stuff people wanted.
It doesn't do that anymore. (Even Microsoft is losing its shine.) It was
one thing when the world needed dollars to buy Made in the USA. Now they need
dollars mostly to buy oil. If that goes away, what?
(I have no idea what the countries that sell oil do with it all. What do
they get out of it other than not being invaded?)
This feller
has a different objection: Is that also why the US is planning to invade Denmark and Norway, two
countries with large new oil reserves found off shore?
It's absurd. For one thing, those finds are not all that large in real
terms, just in recent-find terms. Also, the US is a long way from being able
to spin/sell the idea that Denmark and Norway pose a threat; they're neither
communist nor Islamist.
The idea Iraq is fought in no small part for the petrodollar is better

Essentially, the drug war and felony disenfranchisement served the same purpose in the 2000 election as the old Jim Crow era poll tax, a tax on voting that made it difficult for blacks to participate.FP But even with this, plus opaque and corrupt balloting machinery [also MC], and a misleading and perhaps illegal ballot layout, it will take more than a month of legal maneuvering in Florida to accomplish the installation of GWB. Something very strange happened on election night to Deborah Tannenbaum, a Democratic Party official in Volusia County. At 10 p.m., she called the county elections department and learned that Al Gore was leading George W. Bush 83,000 votes to 62,000. But when she checked the county's Web site for an update half an hour later, she found a startling development: Gore's count had dropped by 16,000 votes, while an obscure Socialist candidate had picked up 10,000—all because of a single precinct with only 600 voters. [DV quoting WP]The promulgated explanation is
faulty memory card, although the evidence is against it: the checksums passed; and the count sum was correct. The Volusia and Brevard errors were big enough to be noticed; noöne knows how many little creeping errors there were in FL.

But by 2003 Mar I'm tremendously grateful, for the PCs or *gaack* Alliance would've put us on offense in an unjustified, illegal war.) Our own electoral system is far from perfect, but speaking as a former candidate's agent, poll clerk, and deputy returning officer, it's a lot more difficult to fiddle the figures in a Canadian election. Every ballot is evaluated by hand in the presence of at least four persons, and the counts in all polls are public information and usually in the newspapers the next morning. Furthermore our ballots are simple, one `issue' or seat each. I would much rather we had a more Condorcet-like electoral system, but I see no way to do it without introducing ballot-counting machinery, and there is no way to do that and keep the process transparent. I believe public credibility is vital in an election, and even though the particular method of synthesiszing individual choice into mass choice may be imperfect, it can be understood and inspected by just about anyone, no special training needed.

We had a good discussion, the Foreign Minister and I and the President and I, had a good discussion about the nature of the sanctions—the fact that the sanctions exist—not for the purpose of hurting the Iraqi people, but for the purpose of keeping in check Saddam Hussein's ambitions toward developing weapons of mass destruction. We should constantly be reviewing our policies, constantly be looking at those sanctions to make sure that they are directed toward that purpose. That purpose is every bit as important now as it was ten years ago when we began it. And frankly they have worked. Funding Emet is Leonard Abramson; he sold US Healthcare to Aetna in the mid-1990s for $8.9 billion. Masoud himself had told this correspondent, two weeks before he was killed, of the incestuous link between bin Laden and al-Qaeda, the Taliban and the ISI. A 2002 Asia Times Online investigation would later establish that Masoud was killed as a gift from al-Qaeda to the Taliban, with heavy involvement by Abdul Sayyaf, an Afghan mujahideen commander very close to the ISI and the Saudis. From Washington's perspective, this was also a gift. Masoud was the crucial Afghan nationalist leader, supported by Russia and Iran; after the Taliban being smashed he would never have accepted a feeble, US-sponsored, Hamid Karzai-style government. We flew past the Twin Towers again on our way to land at LaGuardia.
There was some confusion when we landed at LaGuardia, and over a period of three hours, we were led off the plane, back on the plane, and then off the plane again. This seemed strange at the time. In light of the events of 9/11, we now wonder if the fire in Newark was in any way connected to the terrorist attack which would occur the next day.
