Shakespeare's Sonnet 146 - Lesson Plan
This lesson will fall somewhere within a larger unit on Shakespeare, including both his plays and his sonnets.  I will first read the sonnet to the class so they can get a sense of its rhythm and where the emphasis falls.  I will then ask the students to volunteer their ideas regarding what the sonnet is about.  When they seem to run out of ideas, I will start asking them questions such as, "What do you think Shakespeare means by a 'fading mansion'?  Is he talking about a real house, or something else?"  The students will take turns, two or three at a time, writing notes from our discussion on the board, using techniques I have taught and modeled to them previously.  Once the students have pretty well unpacked the poem and have a good understanding of each line, I will ask them to get into small groups.  Each group will brainstorm together to answer the question, "Based on Sonnet 146, what do you think Shakespeare would say about modern American culture?  What kinds of things do you think he would criticize as being 'so large cost' or 'hours of dross' in our culture?  Why?  What is your opinion?"  At the end of class, each group will share a few of their ideas with the rest of the class.
Shakespeare Links
12th grade English TEKS links and Reader Response web links
- Sonnet 146, with commentary: The author of this site remains stubbornly anonymous, but the commentary seems reasonably well done.  VERY nice illustrations.

- Shakespeare's Sonnets: Good site that touches on themes, characters, criticism, etc. associated with the sonnets.  Excerpts (and sometimes full-text) of articles are available free; more is available to registered users, for a fee.
- Sonnet audio files: Shakespeare's sonnets (and excerpts from two plays!) as read by Sir John Gielgud.

- Shakespeare Online: Extensive resources for everything Shakespeare.

- Mr. Shakespeare and the Internet: This site attempts to be a central clearinghouse for internet Shakespeare resources.  This is a good place for young students to begin their internet research.
