Project: Books for Children in Afghanistan

Background and objective (SEE UPDATE BELOW - WE NEED HELP)

School education in Afghanistan, especially education of girls, has been severely affected during the last two decades of turmoil. There are few books available, and books on universal values of peace and brotherhood are scarce. There is also dearth of books that would attract children and promote reading habits.

This project aims to publish books that promote universal values and encourage reading habits in children. Considering the present state of economy of Afghanistan, these books will be distributed free of cost to schools in Afghanistan. The project will first cover schools in Kabul, and then extend to other areas of Afghanistan.

Update

As a first step, picture books were published in Pushto with the help of friends in India, Japan (specially the Japanese section of the International Board of Books for Young People), Norway and Spain. Please see the 2004 book catalog for the titles distributed. 1500 of these books were distributed by the Foundation in Afghanistan in July 2005 with the assistance of the Government of Afghanistan, Embassy of India in Kabul, and Indian airlines.

These books have a twin objective to promote universal values and to encourage reading habits.

The project intends to publish and distribute books in Dari to primary school children in July 2006. This effort is being supported by the Japanese section of the International Board of Books for Young People.

About 50,000 children are being targeted under this project. The written text, artwork, book design, printing and binding will be closely controlled to ensure the quality of production. We now have an immediate request to publish and distribute books to 200 schools in Kandahar region.
