SPURS: SHATTERED DREAMS

17.03.03                                                                                                                                                                       Next Page

Once again, Spurs fans are left with a disappointing season.  Spurs EPL season began with a big bang, showing promises of greater things to come (perhaps Cup glory or going into Europe) and even led the tables for a couple of weeks early in the season.  However Sunday match effectively ended Spurs' dreams, which the Fans have come to expect from Spurs season after season.  G. Hoddle has over-promised but under-delivered.  He has promised us a place in Europe, but we end up lingering in familiar ground, in mid-table adversity.

Sunday match between the Reds and Spurs was a thriller, after a sterile first half both teams came alive during the second half, scoring five goals between both teams.  Let's side track a little, as this reminds me of the match between Spurs and Man United last season, where we were leading 3-0 in the first half, but then conceded five goals in the second half.  This made me the laughing stock of my M.United foes till today.  The shame was simply unbearable.

Back to last Sunday match, Mauricio Taricco opened the scoring with his first goal for the club just two minutes after the break.  Of course, he could not have done it with a little help form "butter-finger" Dudek.  But two mistakes handed clinical Liverpool the initiative at 2-1 and it was 3-1 before Teddy Sheringham's late reply.  What can I say, my heart was broken the moment man of the match Gerrard created two of Liverpool's goals and sealed the win with a memorable third.

The defensive partnership between Ledley King and Ben Thatcher was good, but we sorely missed the presence of Dean Richards, who is our pillar in defence.  Thus Spurs defenders did a reasonable satisfactory job of containing Owen and Heskey in the first half, but fall apart miserably in the second.

In the end, it all boils down to one issue, the lack of a quality striker.  R. Keane was out through injury. His absence has greatly hampered the firepower of Spurs.  I dare say that if he was fit for this match, we would have won comfortably against Liverpool.  However reality sucks, and we are left with one aging striker and a few jokers on our team.  G.Hoddle should shoulder most of the blame for Spurs mediocre season, as he seems to believe in picking players that is passed their prime and often jump at the cheapest deal in town.  There is no free lunch in this world, and unless Hoddle wake up his F***ing ideas, Spurs will never progress nor win any Cup glory.

Hopefully next season, big money will be made available to Spurs to get some quality players, rather than having so many misfit players around to make up the numbers at White Hart Lane.
