An Alan Smithee Film:
BURN HOLLYWOOD BURN

1998 *** 86 mins.

I don't understand why so many critics bomb this film. I enjoyed it. I loved the campy, faux documentary style this film had, and it had a lot of funny elements in it. Granted, it did get a bit tiresome after a while, and the second half of the film is nowhere near as fresh as the first half, but it's still a fun little 86 minute film.

Everyone knows (especially after this film) that if a director's film is edited against his wishes, he can have his name replaced by the name "Alan Smithee" (which is, ironically, what happened to this film, as it was originally directed by Arthur Hiller). Well, Eric Idle plays a character namedAlan Smithee. So, when his film gets edited against his wishes, he steals the film and burns it. This film consists of "interviews" with people involved with the incident, and it really is fun, if you're not looking for grand filmmaking. If anything, all the bad reviews add to the point of the film. After all, this is Alan Smithee!
Rated R for strong language and some sexual humor.
