This first installment in the Star Trek motion pictures, featuring The Next Generation cast, is a beautiful transition from the original films to the new films.

This film begins with Kirk, Chekhov, and Scotty being guests of honour on the maiden voyage of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-B. However, when the Enterprise encounters a mysterious energy ribbon, the Enterprise is struck by the ribbon. It is written in history that Captain James Tiberius Kirk died while saving the Enterprise B.

Seventy-eight years later, the crew of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D encounter that same energy ribbon. A madman by the name of Soran (Malcolm McDowell) is trying to get to the ribbon. It is up to the crew of the Enterprise to stop him.

The blending together of the old Star Trek with the new is a wonderful touch that truly adds to the greatness of this film. As Pat Collins of WWOR-TV put it, this is a "cosmic hit that all generations will love."
