Carter M. Buford was born and raised in Ellington, Missouri and made it his home most of his life.  He attended school in Ellington and then went to Cape Girardeau where he obtained a law degree.  He held many public offices in Reynolds County.  He was elected to the state senate in 1906 and served many terms.  He was well liked by his constituents.

He married Carrie Copland, a member of another prominent family in Ellington.  To this marriage were born three sons: Anthony, Wilbur, and John.

Shortly after their marriage in 1905 they built the Buford House on Main Street in Ellington.
