Favorite Quote:
"M. le President, my excuses for my late arrival." There was no necessity for this. It was a mere piece of theatricality, such as it was not in Scaramouche's nature to forego. "I have been detained by an engagement of a pressing nature. I bring you also the excuses of M. de Chabrillane. He, unfortunately, will be permanently absent from this Assembly in future." The silence was complete. Andre-Louis sat down. - From Scaramouche by Rafael Sabatini

Character's Full name:
Andre-Louis Moreau (aka Scaramouche)
Occupation:
Has had many professions incl. lawyer, writer, actor, fencing master, politician and agent of the Committee of Public Safety.
Physical Description:
Sabatini describes him as a slight wisp of a fellow, scarcely above middle height (though his excellent posture from constant fencing makes him seem slightly taller than he is). He is also, thanks to fencing, a lot stronger than he looks, especially in the arms (no one under-estimates him twice).
He has a lean, astute countenance, prominent of nose and cheek-bones, with lank black shoulder-length hair (clubbed). His mouth is long, thin-lipped and humourous and he is redeemed from ugliness by a pair of ever-questioning, luminous eyes, so dark as to be almost black.
Friendships/Relationships:
Aline de Kercadieu (the woman he loves), Isaac le Chapelier (Dantonist and friend), Chauvelin (colleague at the CPS), Danton & Demoulins (acquaintances), M. le Marquis de la Tour d'Azyr (Andre's father and nemesis), Mme de Plougastel (Andre's mother), M. Quentin de Kercadieu (Aline's uncle and Andre's Godfather), Baron de Batz (a friend with a common enemy), Le Duc (Andre's assistant at the fencing academy).
Personal History:
"He was born with the gift of laughter and a sense that the world was mad."
In the sleepy village of Gavrillac, near Rennes, a boy is born, the illigitimate son of an unknown aristocrat. He is named Andre-Louis Moreau and his welfare and education are provided for by his godfather M. de Kercadieu, Lord of Gavrillac, whom everyone wrongly assumes to be the boy's real father. Moreau is between worlds. Used by both the aristocracy and the Borgeoisie when it suits them, he is accepted by neither. He has few real friends amongst his fellow professionals because of his annoying habit of pouring cold water on their fiery, utopian dreams of a new order. Intelligent, quick witted and sarcastic, Moreau has earned himself a reputation as heartless, even though in truth he is far from it.
One day Moreau's world is turned upside down. He learns that the girl he worships (Aline de Kercadieu, niece of M. de Kercadieu) has given permission for a neighbouring aristocrat, the vile Marquis de la Tour d'Azyr, to court her. On this same day he learns from his friend Philippe (a priest) that d'Azyr has taken the law into his own hands and executed, without trial, a man caught poaching on his lands. Philippe and Moreau go to see d'Azyr to ask for compensation for the widow of the man. An argument ensues and Philippe, goaded by the Marquis, lets rip his revolutionary theory. D'Azyr, incensed by the priest's opinions, insults him and causes the angry Philippe to demand satisfaction. Moreau is not overly worried. After all, the contest is so unequal - Philippe has never held a sword and d'Azyr is one of the finest blades in France - surely the Marquis will merely teach the priest a lesson... instead he kills him. When Moreau accuses D'Azyr of murder, he is told that his dead friend had a "dangerous gift of eloquence" and had to be silenced. Moreau swears revenge. Though he does not truly believe Philippe's ideology, he will fight for it and make it sound louder than Philippe ever could have done, thus rendering his murder in vain.
That night Moreau makes a treasonous speech which starts a riot in Rennes and forces him to go on the run. From that moment onwards he and d'Azyr are bound to thwart each other at every opportunity. Moreau hides himself amongst a troupe of travelling comedia dell'arte actors, where he earns the name Scaramouche. He courts the lead actress, but her head is turned by d'Azyr, to whom she was never more than a night's pleasure. Moreau leaves the troupe and goes to Paris, securing a job as assistant fencing master at the academy of M. Bertrand des Amis. He has a natural talent for the art and soon out classes the master. When the Bastille is stormed in 1789, M. des Amis is unfortunately killed in the ensuing chaos. Moreau inherits the academy. No longer needing to hide for his life, Moreau seeks reconciliation with his godfather and Aline. It is given on the premise that he keeps out of politics from then on.
Easier said than done. Isaac le Chapelier and Danton arrive at his academy to beg his help. Members of the third estate are being goaded into duels and murdered by members of the first... led by d'Azyr. Moreau becomes a representative and joins the Assembly. Sure enough he is provoked, but of course this time the aristocrats have under-estimated their quarrey. For a whole week he is challenged daily and for a whole week he despatches his opponents with cold precision until finally they uncover his profession. Moreau is angry because he wanted to fight d'Azyr, but the man never approached him, so using d'Azyr's own tactics he goads him into demanding satisfaction.
Aline and Mme de Plougastlel (a friend of M. de Kercadieu's who had always taken a keen interest in Moreau) hear of the duel. They try to stop it but to no avail...
