    Through The Looking Glass

    Synopsis | Story | Continuity | Quotes | Trivia | Writer | Director | Aliens | Farewell | Guest | Personal

    Brief synopsis:
    Four way split
Moya and Pilot overhear the crew talking about abandoning Moya, and attempt to prove their worth by performing a starburst 15 arns before Moya is fully recharged. Unfortunately, this results in the ship getting stuck in an inter-dimensional schism. Moya seperates into four distinct versions and the crew have to find a way to get Moya out, but has the rift between dimensions grown too large?

    The Main Story:
    Headset preparation
The crew discuss abandoing Moya as the ship's pregnancy makes it increasingly hard to starburst, increasing the risk of being re-captured by the Peacekeepers. Aeryn and John are against the idea, and wish to care for Moya, but Rygel, Zhaan and D'Argo all believe the time may have come to leave. Chiana points out however, that the DRDs are listening, just as Pilot interrupts them. He makes an announcement, stating that Moya is as concerned as they are about the starburst problem, and wishes to demonstrate that even now, she is capable of going into starburst.

Something goes badly wrong however, and at first, the crew believe they have hit something. As they regain their senses, they discover the Rygel is missing, so D'Argo goes off to find him. However, as he leaves, he disappears completely. Aeryn goes after him, and similarly vanishes. John runs to command to talk with Pilot, who reports that there is no power, and that nothing works at all. He sends the DRDs off to search for the missing crewmembers.

John then himself disappears, and finds himself on another version of Moya, with a harsh red light that immediately makes him feel sick. He narrowly misses meeting D'Argo, and goes in search of Pilot, with no success. He then investigates a strange noise, and is transported again, this time to a blue version with a constant ear-piercing noise assaulting him. Again, he finds no Pilot aboard, but this time bumps into Aeryn. After Aeryn enquires as to the whereabouts of D'Argo and John of Rygel, the two go to investigate the rest of the ship, and encounter some kind of inter-dimensional creature that leaves scratch marks across Moya's walls.

Shortly afterwards, John gets transported again, now to a yellow Moya, where he finally finds Rygel. At first, there seem to be no negative effects from the yellow light, but soon he and Rygel are laughing and joking as if there is some kind of infectious gas in the air. After encountering another clawed creature, John makes his way back to the regular Moya, and discusses with Pilot the problem. Pilot explains that Starburst is on the seam between space time dimensions, and that they are still in starburst, possibly stuck in some kind of dimensional schism. Comedian Rygel

Pilot suggests that they need more power in order to break free of Starburst, and gives John instructions to relay to each member of the crew aboard the different versions of Moya, so that they will have maximum reverse thrust. After apologising to Pilot for pushing Moya and him into trying to prove themselves, John heads off with Chiana to relay the instructions to D'Argo. Despite Chiana being immune to the redlight, when she and John go to the blue version, the young Nebari is severely affected by the blue light, so John sends her on ahead to Rygel. Happily, when John meets Aeryn, not only has she found a way round the sound problem, with modified flight headsets, but is also familiar with the reverse thrust sequence already, and heads off to sort it out.

John then makes his way to the yellow version and helps Rygel, and finally heads back to the normal Moya. Sections of the ship are beginning to disappear, and Pilot says that the thrust is not enough. He does however say that Moya would lose her baby to gain the power to break free as it was her who got them into this mess. John refuses, as does Zhaan, when suddenly another attack happens. This time, Crichton tells Zhaan not to shoot as he realises that the scratches represent prime numbers, and that the creature is trying to communicate. John steps into the dimensional breach.

Once inside, he meets a guardian of the "in between", a powerful being that destroys any matter that gets stuck between different existances. This is the first time any living matter has achieved this though, and John convinces the being to help them escape unharmed. They can be guided, forwards, and returned to the space where they started, as long as John can get Moya to provide the forward thrust. He returns to Moya, where only a split second has passed, and tells Pilot the situation. Reluctantly, Pilot agrees, and they arrange to initiate full forward thrust in 500 microts. Wrong place at the wrong time

John makes his way to the red Moya, and tells D'Argo to count down from 300 here, then goes to the blue version where he passes the message to Aeryn, 130 microts to go, and then when he finally makes it to the Pilot's den on the yellow Moya, avoiding the disappearing parts of the ship, he initiates full forwards thrust, despite jokes from Rygel and Chiana, and the ship escapes from starburst, and all the crew find themselves lying on top of eachother in the real Pilot's den.

After their adventure is over, the crew get back to eating, and are interrupted again by Pilot, but this time for good news. The baby is fine, doing well in fact, and Moya feels that it should be due fairly soon.

    References and continuity:

The painting in Rygel's quarters which John passes by on the blue Moya was painted by Zhaan when Rygel was trying (and failing) to do a self-portrait. Rygel claimed it looked a lot like Rygel I.

Aeryn has a great deal of knowledge about leviathan operation after her encounter with Namtar who placed a certain amount of Pilot DNA in Aeryn's body (see DNA Mad Scientist). Though it was removed, she still retains the imprint, and has become gradually closer to Pilot over this season.

What baby? Moya became pregnant after D'Argo broke a Peacekeeper shield inside Moya, releasing baby ingredients. The baby has been growing steadily since that episode, They've Got A Secret.

John refers to Rygel as Napoleon, a French military leader famous for many things, including his low height, and self-importance as a leader.

    Funny or interesting quotes:

Crichton: "I've gotta get out of here before I end up like you"
Rygel: "What? Handsom with a great sexual prowess!"

On the yellow Moya, Rygel certainly exercises his sense of humour.

Rygel: "No Dominar from the house of Rygel ever travels in reverse."
Crichton: "Well, turn around and pretend your going forwards"

John responds with some of his own humour as he tries to convince Rygel to just get on with the job.

Rygel: "Should I disrobe to make it memorable?"

With the ship ready to go forward, Rygel offers to disrobe so that they all remember the experience. Thankfully he doesn't.

    Episode Trivia:

    • Moya tried to starburst 15 arns before she was ready.
    • D'Argo counts using the word "Mippippi".
    • In early plans, a green slime creature was going to play the part of the inter-dimensional alien.
    • Grandma Crichton's buttermilk biscuits were made using self raising flour, salt, shortening, a touch of honey, and buttermilk.

    Farewell to:

Baby worries Pilot and Moya feel confident that the time is coming for Moya's baby to be born.
Rygel's clothes, almost! Yellow light certainly had comedy effects on the Hynerian!

    Guest Stars:
    Gigi Edgley
    • There were none in this episode (other than Gigi Edgley, pretty much a regular cast member now).

    Personal Opinion:

I thought this was an excellent episode, and certainly of David Kemper standard (look out for some of his episodes later on!). It had the action, the danger, the jokes, the crew relationships, and all parts the episode needed to come together nicely. It would have been nice to see more science behind the dimensional rift, but even Pilot seemed almost as clueless as we are.

Chiana hasn't quite made herself useful yet, though she was willing to help out with a pulse pistol when necessary, but this will definitely change as the episodes go by. However, as stand alone episodes go, this is probably one of the best of the series, good stuff!

A nice comedy and action mix!9/10
