Goofy is just what his name implies goofy. He has a strange endearing walk, and a funny laugh. He manages to get into all kinds of trouble. Yet, no matter the mess, he always comes out on top.
He also tries very hard to be a teacher. He has been in many a short meaning to teach us some thing. Things such as skiing, horseback riding and self-defense. If we actually followed his instruction we would be far from experts at the end of his lessons.
He has also changed through the years. He must have fallen in the fountain of youth, because he is much younger now than in his earlier years.
Babbit's description of Goofy [1935]
Think of Goof as a composite of an everlasting optimist, a gullible Good Samaritan, a half-wit, and a shiftless, good-natured hick...He can move fast if he has to, but would rather avoid any overexertion, so he takes what seems the easiest way. ...He is very bashful, yet when something very stupid has befallen him, he mugs the camera like an amateur actor with relatives in the audience, trying to cover up his embarrassment by making faces and signaling to them. ...The improbable becomes real where the Goof is concerned.

Why is Goofy So Popular?we are all from time to time capable of demonstrating his distinctive brand of good-humoured folly, of bumbling when we try to excel. Every now and then we are all Goofs. In Goofy we see ourselves reflected. That, maybe, is the "secret factor" that makes the Goof so much loved by so many. |
