5 May 2003 - Great article from the New York Daily News on the New York Magic Youth Girls' Soccer Team and Julia's family involvement.

Practicing Magic
Team succeeds despite lacking field
by Clem Richardson

The young women on the city's first Youth Soccer Super Y-League team need a home. Without a field to call their own, the teen and preteen members of the New York Magic Youth Soccer Team tour the five boroughs weekly just to hold practice.

They turn up in Red Hook or on Dyker Field in Brooklyn, Randalls Island in the Bronx, Chelsea Waterside Park or Grand St. in Manhattan, anywhere team officials can find a few open hours for the girls to kick a ball around on one of the city's overbooked athletic fields.

"A good part of my week is spent finding a place for us to practice," said team general manager Judith Stiles. But no one seems to mind. On a recent Friday afternoon, a full roster, 23 girls of all sizes, hues and ethnicities, bounded across the artificial turf field off Bay St. in Red Hook like they were training for the Olympics. It probably helped that they were holding their own quite well in a scrimmage against a boys' team.

"I love being out on the field," said Taylor Rovito, 12, of Staten Island. "I've been playing since I was 3 years old." Deliah Maxwell, 13, of Co-op City in the Bronx, Elizabeth Kenworthy, 14, of Manhattan and Nancy Vargas, 13, of Brooklyn all echoed Taylor's comments.

"These girls are awesome," Stiles said. "They come from every borough in the city, and they show up ready to play." The Youth is a "development" team of the New York Magic women's professional soccer team. The kids - the oldest is 15, the youngest, 12 - wear the Magic's red and black colors and will play half of their games as double headers with the pros at Iona College in New Rochelle.

The Magic Youth team is also the first city team to be part of the national Super Y-League, which serves as a feeder system for men's and women's college and professional soccer teams. Richard Greene, who with his wife, Katherine, serves as a team manager, said members are drawn from the top one-half of 1% of players on school and club teams across the city.

That's a long way of saying they are the best of the best, and they play like it. The fledgling squad beat the Ramapo College women's team in a scrimmage last month. "All of these girls are committed to soccer," Greene said, noting that most make all four practices held each week. "Before, to find a girls team that plays at this level you had to go to the suburbs."

The team is also committed to them, a commitment made easier in part by the general manager's daughter, actress and former soccer league player Julia Stiles.

The Columbia University student, whose sister, Jane, is a midfielder on the team, has provided scholarships for players unable to afford the equipment and other expenses related to the sport.

The actress said that by helping the players she is helping the game. "Soccer clubs are very exclusive and usually limited to certain neighborhoods, not because of the differences in ability but simply because of the dues you have to pay to join," Julia Stiles said at the Red Hook practice. "I am glad to help the Magic bring really good soccer players from all over the city to the same playing field."

The team is also a family affair for the Greenes, whose daughter, Sandy, is a goalie. The girls are coached by Gustavo Palamino, who played on the Peruvian World Cup team, and former women's pro player Laura Rizzo.

But Judith Stiles says the team is about more than soccer. For young girls on the cusp of womanhood, it's about learning how to win. "This team is for young women who truly desire to succeed at anything they do - school, sports, the theater," she said.

"Julia played soccer, and I know the lessons she learned on the field have helped her in her professional career." Judith Stiles said she hopes to expand the city entrants to Super-Y 0league and start teams in the Bronx and East Harlem.

After opening the season with two road games, the New York Magic Youth Soccer Team will play its first home game at 1 p.m. June 9 at Iona College in New Rochelle against a league opponent, the New Jersey Stallions.

5 May 2003 - More 'Prince' location news:

..The head of the Directors Guild of America is shooting in Toronto and Prague. With DGA president Martha Coolidge preparing to direct The Prince and the Freshman, and the Great White North (Canada) again standing in for the U.S., the lack of creative muscle on the issue of runaway production has never been more evident.

"While I prefer to shoot the American scenes of the film in the U.S., there are economic realities to consider," Coolidge notes.

The decision to shoot in Prague is understandable, since part of "Prince," a Paramount-Lions Gate co-prod starring Julia Stiles, is set in Eastern Europe. But scenes set in the Midwest will be shot in Canada, where it's significantly cheaper. - Variety

Eastern Europe gets its first mention as a setting - isn't the Prince Danish or English? Perhaps Prague will be a stand in for Copenhagen....

1 May 2003 - More on Prague from Variety:

Prague-based production service company Stillking has landed its third feature this year, Paramount romantic comedy "The Prince and the Freshman."

Shooting in castles around the Czech Republic begins in mid July for five weeks, after winding up its Toronto leg. Martha Coollidge helms and Julia Stiles stars as the American coed who falls for the prince of Denmark.

This is the first word that Toronto is also a location, and the prince is once again Danish!
