Ewan was a pupil at Morrison's Academy, Crief, from when he started primary school up until Form 5 (16 years old) when he left to follow his passion for acting. Being a former pupil of the school is not Ewan's only connection
with Morrison's: his father James McGregor has been a careers advisor and PE teacher for many years and his older
brother, Colin, was Head Boy during 1987/88.
At sixteen, Ewan left Crieff and Morrison Academy, to gain worldly experience with the Perth Repertory Theatre. His parents encouraged him to leave school and pursue his acting goals rather than be unhappy. Ewan studied drama for a year at Kirkcaldly in Fife, Fife College of Further and Higher Education, in 1988. then enrolled at London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama for a three-year course. Right before graduating he snagged the role of Private Mick Hopper in Dennis Potter's 1993 six-part Channel 4(UK) series Lipstick on Your Collar and left to pursue his acting career.
During his childhood he enjoyed playing the French Horn, drums, guitar, horse riding, sub-aqua diving and swimming. He later went on to use these talents in many of his acting roles. When he was at school he did surprisingly little acting but performed solos for the choir and the orchestra and recited poems for school plays.
While living in Crieff he worked at the stables at Crieff Hydro because of his love for horses. When he left school he became a stage-hand at Perth Theatre where he spent a lot of time taking in the qualities of the acting around him and this has made him a very natural and believable actor on screen.
On 7th February 1997 Ewan returned to visit his old school, Morrison's Academy.
He gave a lecture to some of the senior pupils about his rollercoaster ride to fame, describing the highs and lows of his childhood dreams, how he got into acting and the film industry in general. Ewan found himself the centre of everyone's attention
Ewan has formed a production company with friends Jonny Lee Miller, Sean Pertwee, Jude Law and Sadie Frost. Called Natural Nylon, they hope it will make innovative films that do not conform to Hollywood standards.
