.. ....The Getaway Gouge Sheet

What to do and where to go when you absolutely, positively need to leave Yuma!

After a long deployment, you deserve a vacation! Here is information on military lodging in locations near Yuma.  All of these lodgings accept children; if you dont have kids, and youre heading for San Diego, check out a BOQ at any of the Navy or Marine Corps bases in San Diego.  Dont forget to get discount tickets for San Diego attractions at ITT, located inside the Main Exchange.

FLAGSTAFF - Fort Tuttle Recreation Area    Operated by Luke Air Force Base, Fort Tuthill offers accommodations ranging from a campground to yurts (tent-like cabins), hotel rooms, cabins and 2 bedroom A-frames.  The facility includes BBQs and a large playground.  Flagstaff is usually 30 degrees cooler than Yuma in the summer and often has snow in the winter.  Youre also in a fun college town and within 60-90 minutes of hiking, Sedona, various Native American ruins, and the Grand Canyon.  Prices vary with the size of your room, but you can rent an A-frame for about $95/ night, hotel rooms $55-$65 / night. Reservations are accepted 6 months in advance. www.forttuthill.com  1-800-552-6268

SAN DIEGO The beaches, San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park, Sea World, Lego Land, shopping and ethnic food what more could you want?! Lodging options include:

North Island Naval Air Station (aka Coronado)      The TLF is located on the beach (with lifeguards) and has a large playground.  The rooms in the new building have a mini fridge and microwave, while the older rooms include a kitchenette.  North Island is a beautiful base, just down the beach from the Hotel Del Coronado.  Coronado Island offers enough great restaurants that you can spend a few days there without crossing the bridge back to San Diego.  Rooms are about $73/ night. Reservations accepted 60 days in advance.  www.navy-lodge.com  1-800-NAVY- INN (1-800-628-9466) or (619) 435-0191

San Diego Naval Air Station       Located off I-5 at the 28th Street exit (just south of the east end of the bridge to Coronado).  There isnt much of a base there, but the hotel style rooms (some with kitchenettes) are next to a trolley stop and a large PX (probably the best one in San Diego).  Rooms are about $59-$67/night.  Reservations accepted 60 days in advance.

Naval Submarine Base (Point Loma)    Rooms are inexpensive, but only available on a Space-A basis, so you need to arrive around 3 or 4pm. There are some great tide pools on the western side of Point Loma.  Check out the San Diego Tribune for the time of low tide and bring a change of clothes and shoes, as your kids will get wet!   (619) 553-9381

Camp Pendleton      The base offers cottages and campsites on the beach at Del Mar and San Onofre. The locations are beautiful! -A new 1 bedroom cottage at Del Mar is $65/night. At San Onofre Beach, cottage rates are 1 bedroom- $45/night; 2 bedroom- $50/night and 3 bedroom-$60/night.  Campsites are $12-22/night. www.mccscamppendleton.com   (760)763-SURF (7873) or (760)763-SAND (7263)
