Continental Cargo division developed a software application called CargoProf to maximize revenue from its aircraft freight compartments. The software is a customized package from Manugistics Inc, of Rockville., Maryland, and ensures that Continental sells all available freight space on its carriers at the most profitable price. The system forecasts cargo capacity and sets an optimal value on what they need. Continental booking agents transmit freight order requests for reservations on a given flight. Continental's legacy reservation system captures orders data, such as a shipment's weight, dimensions, and contract price and forwards the data to CargoProf. The CargoProf software checks available capacity in the airplane's bays, taking into account both the size and weight of the cargo, and compares it against a pricing model. The software then considers several other variables, such as anticipated passenger baggage and extra fuel requirements based on seasonal factors. CargoProf then analyzes these numbers and either accepts the reservation at the customers contract price or rejects it if taking on the shipment is not cost effective.  if the customer order is rejected for one flight, CargoProf can check other flights to determine whether they could profitably carry the cargo. Cargo Prof saved Continental $9 million over a two year period.
