Newtownshandrum 2-5 Carbery 0-1

Newtownshandrum had a good win over Carbery in the opening round of the County Senior Camogie Championship at Ballincollig on Monday 28th June 1999. The first score of the game came to Newtown when Paula O'Connor pointed in the 10th minute. Carbery had some near misses before Eleanor Kenneally set up Valerie O'Keeffe who pointed after 14 minutes to draw level.

Caoimhe Harrington pointed for Newtown from a free two minutes later. Paula O'Connor extended the lead when she waltzed past four Carbery defenders and finished to the net. With Valerie O'Keeffe and Hilda Kenneally dominating at midfield, Carbery enjoyed maximum possession. But wasted chances saw them shoot nine wides and go in trailing at the interval 1-2 to 0-1.

The second half saw Newtown well on top with Claire Browne very effective in the full-back line and the entire half-back trio of Fiona Kelleher, Helen Kelleher and Caroline Giltinane doing very well. Three points in the 6th, 14th, and 15th minutes from Caoimhe Harrington, Paula O'Connor and Niamh Bowles helped to steady Newtownshandrum' nervousness.

A goalmouth scramble saw Muireann Harrington have the second goal three minutes before full-time to give Newtown a comfortable 10 point winning margin.
Newtown now meet the winners of Fr.O'Neills and Seandun.

Newtownshandrum 0-9
Fr. O'Neills 1-12

Fr. O'Neills dream of taking a Cork county senior camogie championship title went a step closer when they defeated Newtownshandrum in a tough quarter-final encounter at Mayfield on Sunday 11th July 1999. Mary Kennefick and Caoimhe Harrington had swapped points in the opening eight minutes before Fiona O'Driscoll edged Fr. O'Neills ahead with two well taken points.

With the O'Neills forwards being maximum space Mary Kennefick won possession on the wing, evaded the Newown defence and finished superbly past Geraldine Coleman to get the game's opening goal 14 minutes into the contest. Undaunted by the setback, Newtownshandrum settled down.

Points by Paula O'Connor and Caoimhe Harrington cut the deficit but, continuing to win ample possession, Fr. O'Neills popped over three points to which O'Connor and Harrington again replied to leave the East Cork girls ahead 1-6 to 0-5 at the interval. A determined second half rally which yielded thre points without reply from Carina Carroll, Paula O'Connor, and Caoimhe Harrington had Newtownshandrum within one point of the leaders 1-6 to 0-8 inside six minutes. Mary Kennefick and Fiona O'Driscoll took the pressure off with two points in the tenth and twelveth minutes. The Fr.O'Neills defence in which captain Mags Finn, Liz Sweetnam and Sharon McCarthy were excelling, they introduced Nora Aherne who pointed with her first touch. Taking control O'Neills added points from Sinead Cahalane and Mary Kennefick. Newtown did have a Caoimhe Harrington point, but Fr. O'Neills t their credit never panicked when the pressure was on and ran out deserving winners.
