Senior B Championship Final

1997 was the first year that Newtownshandrum Camogie Club competed in the Cork Senior B competition. Little was known of our Senior B team. This was the year we made our big breakthrough. We beat Newcestown in the first round. Barryroe were next to fall and we beat Aghabullogue in the semi final at Grenagh. St. Finbarrs were our victims in the final at Ballinlough. Newtown had six points to spare at the final whistle and so the first Senior B title had come to Newtown!

Newtownshandrum

at Ballinlough on Sunday October 12th 1997 @ 3pm
Referee: Tracy Sheehan, Mayfield

This was the fourth Senior B final since the competitions inception in 1994. Previous winners have been Bishopstown in 1994, Fr O'Neills 1995, Inniscarra in 1996. This is Newtown's first final appearance in Cork.

Newtownshandrum 4-5 St. Finbarrs 1-8

Newtown's Senior B team contested the eagerly awaited county final against St. Finbarrs in Ballinlough. The game lived up to its expectations as everyone was on tender-hooks until the final whistle. Newtown played with the aid of the wind in the opening half. From the throw in both teams fought for every ball and the game was a close affair. At half time Newtown held a two point lead. The remainder of the game proved to be very exciting. In the second half Newtown built up an impressive lead but a lapse in concentration saw St. Finbarrs reduce the deficit to just two points. However, the accuracy of our forwards told its own story with player of the match, Caoimhe Harrington contributing 2-3. Newtown emerged victorious on the scoreline of Newtown 4-5 St. Finbarrs 1-8. At the final whistle there were scenes of jubilation. It was a spectacular feat to have won county honours in our first year in Cork camogie.

Captain, Helen Kelleher received the cup from the county secretary, Sheila Golden. Helen thanked St. Finbarrs for such a sporting match and praised all those involved in the preparation for the game. On behalf of the panel she thanked our trainers Seamus Kelleher and Sheila Thompson and officers Eileen Noonan and Siobhan Bowles for all their help and co-operation throughout the year.

The Path To The Final...

Newtownshandrum 2-8 Newcestown 0-5
21st September 1997

Goals in the second and twenty third minute guided Newtownshandrum to victory in the first round of the Senior B championship. At half time, the sides were level two points a piece, but in the second half Newtownshandrum upped the pace and their goal in the second minute settled them. Newcestown to their credit fought hard but on the day could not curtail a fitter and stronger Newtownshandrum.

Newtownshandrum 0-13 Barryroe 0-8
28th September 1997

This was the quarter final of the Senior B championship. Having won the toss, we opted to play against the wind in the first half. The opening half proved to be a close affair, and the half time score read Newtown 0-4, Barryroe 0-4. The second half was as closely contested as the first. The sides were level on more than one occasion. Assisted by the wind, Newtown began to convert the scoring opportunities. In the closing stages, we began to dominate and were victorious on the scoreline of Newtown 0-13, Barryroe 0-8.

Newtownshandrum 3-13 Aghabullogue 1-6
5th October 1997

Newtownshandrum defeated Aghabullogue 3-13 to 1-6 in the Cork Senior B Camogie semi-final in Grenagh on Saturday, but the scoreline does not reflect the picture of this entertaining game. Newtown opened the scoring with a Caoimhe Harrington point in the first minute and by the ninth minute they led 0-4 to 0-1 thanks mainly to the hardworking midfield duo of Lisa and Helen Kelleher. Aghabullogue kept in touch with a Helena Moynihan point, but then disaster struck. Newtown hit two goals inside a minute; one from Caoimhe Harrington that put them in the driving seat. The third, from Paula O'Connor, then gave them a 3-5 to 0-3 interval lead. Eileen Buckley's move to midfiled benefited Aghabullogue and twelve minutes into the half sub Sheila Marie Crowley goaled and a Helena Moynihan point saw the deficit reduced to just seven. However, Newtown regained control and they will now meet St. Finbarr's in next weeks final.
