Practice hearts for HAND appliqué
If you make four hearts you can have a really cute 12 inch pillow.
Cut four background squares 6" and four squares for the hearts.  Look below for some examples.
.

Cut out a heart shape from freezer paper about 4 1/2 inches wide or so.  You will sew it to a six inch square so cut the heart to fit a pleasing way to your on the square.

To make a template from the heart, iron your freezer paper heart to your cardboard. (yes, it works)

Cut that out from the cardboard. Be careful you don't get any jaggy edges as these will show up on your appliqué too!  If  you do get some jaggy edges, you can file them smooth with a nail file.

This is your heart template. Trace around the heart template onto the freezer paper four times.

Cut out the hearts from the freezer paper carefully.  Once again, you want to avoid jaggy edges because if you have them here, you will have them on your appliqué. You can't file them off here.

(Now, if you don't have freezer paper where you live, you can just use the cardboard to prepare your heart shapes.  Just cut out four cardboard hearts.)
.

Look at your freezer paper.  One side is shiny and one side is dull and like paper.

You want to iron the shiny side of the freezer paper to the wrong side of your fabric.

If you are working with 6" squares of fabric, just center the hearts on the fabric.
