The Prior Effect

Mark Prior had an enormous effect on the team's hitting it seems. When coming from the minors to pitch his first major league game on May 22 he boosted the Cubs' offense toward a 7-4 win. Fred McGriff and Moises Alou both had two hits, McGriff a double and Alou a triple. Sosa hit his 17th homerun which secured the team's win.

The next day, rookie number two Bobby Hill hit his first major league homerun, a two-run blast that helped the Cubs win Thursday's game 11-6. He had two more hits and a total of 4 RBIs.

Maybe prior is just what the Cubs needed, or maybe it's just what a city needs that doesn't want to see its favorite baseball team have another losing season. As one reporter called it, a rookie game like Prior's makes a difference "in a city that could get stoned off a whiff of Michael Jordan's old socks."

Now, to all those reporters out there, please don't bring this guy down when he loses, and don't call him the next Tom Seaver when he wins. Let him play, let him help the Cubs rotation. He's young, and he's got a whole career to go.

Don't spoil it just yet.

here the latest entries in the articles section will appear (however, so far all of them are new, so wait for the really new ones that come if people actually find this site on the net)

  • Mark prior is only the 14th Cubs pitcher since 1920 to win his major league debut

  • Though pitching 10 Ks in six innings, Prior was actually 0-2 at bat, and got a pinch hitter in the sixth, who in turn was booed out, because the fans wanted to see more of Prior.
