Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,
singing and making melody in your heart to the lord;

What A Friend
We Have In Jesus

The writer of this famous song was Joseph Scriven. It`s a hymn known and loved all over the world. Joseph was born to wealthy parents on September 10, 1819, Seapatrick, County Down, Ireland.

Joseph was a man who knew tragedy well. On the night before he was to be married, his fiance drowned. It was soon after this that he decided to leave his native country and migrate to Canada. He eventually ended up in Port Hope, Canada and was determined to devote all of his extra time in being a friend and helper to others and become known as the Good Samaritan of Port Hope.

The year was 1855 and while living in his new homeland, Joseph heard word of his seriously ill mother. He knew that he must comfort her in some way, so he wrote her a poem. It was years later that a friend came across the poem. When asked about the authorship he said, "The lord and I did it between us." That poem was only meant for his mother but years later became one of the best beloved hymns of today. It wasn`t until 1868 that the poem was put to music by Charles C. Converse.

Joseph Scriven died August 10, 1886, and is buried at Pengelly Cemetery, near Port Hope, Ontario, Canada.

Jesus Is Our Friend

What a friend we have in Jesus, All our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry, Everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry, Everything to God in prayer!

Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere?
We shall never be discouraged, Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful, Who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness, Take to to the Lord in prayer.

Are we weak and heavy-laden, Cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Saviour, still our refuge, Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee? Take it to the lord in prayer;
In His arms He`ll take and shield thee, Thou wilt find a solace there.
