Learning About Stained Glass

These links contains anything do to with learning about stained glass. I have a section for stained glass book publishers, magazines, and instructional guides. There are also links to stained glass link lists, newsgroups, schools, and associations.

For stained glass history buffs, I also have links related to the history of stained glass and Louis Tiffany links.

For the hot glass enthusiasts, I have links for blown glass, hot glass, fused glass, glass beads, marbles and paperweights.

And of course the free pattern section where each site should have a few patterns for free.

Any links that have an Update by it has a new address. So be sure to update your bookmarks.


FREE PATTERNS

A lot of these pages are listed above in different sections. I decided to separate those pages for your convenience. A lot of people have been asking around the net for free stained glass patterns, so here they are:

NewThe Stained Glass Exchange - They have free patterns listed by category, ranging from 3-D to Suncatchers. There are a lot of patterns here.

NewPaned Expressions Studio - They have 1 free pattern per month. Each one is a nice looking panel, with colored example.

Tiffanyglaskunst - Over a dozen, original looking suncatcher designs. Though the patterns are in german, I think you'll be able to understand it anyway.

TiffGlaze Stained Glass Art - They have a few free patterns here.

Silver Bough Designs - 4 free calla lily designs (panels).

Stained Glass art by Connie Hahn - 1 pattern (panel).

The Oak Tree - Stained Glass - A few basic oval windows. They sell a few things here too.

Meyer Art Glass - Currently they have 2 designs, both 3-D (and are pretty nice looking). There are also terrarium pictures here.

Dragons Lair - They offer 6 lamp patterns (panel type lamp).

BaxGlass Designs - Small general suncatcher designs.

Don & Lou Deskins - There are a lot of free patterns here. About 12 categories, each with at least 5 patterns.

Casa Creations - Free stained glass patterns, of generic design. Mostly panels. A few tips as well.

Free Stained Glass Patterns from Discounted Stained Glass - They have about a half dozen or so suncatcher patterns.

Alpine Glass - They offer monthly designs of panels.

Pane in the Glass - It looks like there is about 5 new patterns each month. Ranging from abstract to flowers.

Black Horse Studio's - They offer cute horse patterns.

Cole Brother's Stained Glass - They have free stepping stone patterns. I saw hex and paver patterns there.

Jana's Stained glass Patterns - There are a few patterns to choose from here.

Aanraku Stained Glass Free Pattern Page - They have patterns of the windows they made. They are very good. They also have the colored drawing (or I should say the finished piece).

Art Glass World - There's a mix of patterns here. There all taken from various books. All the patterns have a finished project to go with it.

Connected Lines Patterns - They sell their designs or you can buy their software. But there are some free samples towards the bottom of the page. Basically they're outlines of photo's, and they may need some fine tuning. Sells for $65.00

Diamond Tech International - They have a couple of free patterns for mosaics.

The Glass Eye - Internet Edition - There are quite a few patterns in the contest winners section. Unfortunately, the patterns are not in a usable pattern form. They're divided up into 4 pieces, though I really don't know why.

Patterns...Your Way! - I'm not sure what kind of patterns they have. You have to fill out a survey to get it, and then they e-mail it to you.

Stained Glass by Steve - Pattern Plug-Ins - They have a few small suncatchers designs, with a BMP extension.

The Stained Glass Biz - They have a few patterns for windows. There done up a traditional stained glass pattern technique.

Suzanne Cooper - Free Patterns - She has a couple of free mosaic patterns.

Spectrum Glass Free Pattern - All the free patterns here are from the Score (the magazine they give out for free). There are quite a few here.

Marianne's Treasures - These come from our friends at Warner-Crivellaro.

The Bungi Pattern Archive - Here's a bunch of patterns the folks at Bungi collected.


PRICING

Mr. Gnome's Pricing Guide - He shows us his technique for pricing stained glass.

Stained Glass Pricing - This page gives formula's on what to charge for stained glass. They also have pictures of their work.


ON-LINE BOOK PUBLISHERS or PATTERN MAKERS

NewLeslie Gibbs Studio - She shows at least 4 of here books here.

NewDeBrady Glass Ships - He makes little glass ships and boats. But he also sells the patterns, click on patterns, then on patterns and books.

Suzanne Cooper - Stained Glass - She has designed over 20 pattern books.

Wardell Publications - They've published over 2 dozen books and growing.

Papillon Publications by Donna Schulze - Makers of books that range in mosaics, lamps and panels. There's also a free pattern here, from one of her books.

Dodge Studio Designs - They have pictures of the patterns they sell, they also have tips.


STAINED GLASS SOFTWARE

The Glass Magic - Program can design lamps, boxes, panels, etc. There's around 50 patterns contained in the software, along with a step by step construction guide. There is no demo, and you have to buy it from a local catalog (listed on his page).

Stained Glass Designs - Presents a pattern re-sizer software. As far a I can tell it makes the pattern larger.

American Bevel Inc. - They sell stained glass software. You can download their demo, or buy it for a mere $175.

Dragonfly Software - Makers of The Glass Eye, software that allows you to make patterns on your PC.


STAINED GLASS MAGAZINES

Common Ground Glass - Choose that heading to see the back issues. It's a magazine filled with tips and information. A lot of the people who are on Bungi, write for that magazine. The IGGA is behind that magazine.

Stained Glass Quarterly - Don't get this confused with Stained Glass Patterns Quarterly this is a different magazine. This magazine as articles for contemporary and architectural designs. They discuss the history of those topics. This magazine is pointed more to the professional.

Stained Glass Patterns Quarterly - Their magazine has a variety of patterns to choose from, though mainly it's for beginners. On just about all the patterns that they give out each time you get the magazine, they'll give you step by step instructions on how to build it.

Art Glass World - They have links to many glass sites, tips, ideas, etc. So check this one out.


STAINED GLASS BOOKS

White House Books - Glass books, Ceramic books, many types of books.

Quick Search - Glass Books - A search engine for books about glass, they have a list of over 2300 books.

Eaton's Glass Books On The Web - He sell's glass books of all kinds. There's also an out-of-print section as well. And from what i've seen the prices are lower then other places I've been to.


MISCELLANEOUS INSTRUCTION

NewHow to Take Good Slides of your Lamp by Don Conti - Gives a pretty good lesson on how to photograph a stained glass lamp.

NewCole Sonafrank's Remarks on Lead Free Solder - A fairly in depth article about lead free solder.

Large Thin Mirror Making ...by Mel Bartels - Describes the process in making mirrors for telescopes.

Stained Glass Instruction - Everything about stained glass from across the pond, in the U.K. Every link you can find and resource, but only in the U.K. No American stuff here, no siree. Tips, news, photo's etc, if your a person living in the U.K., and do stained glass, go here.

Glass Easel - Using a glass easel for better glass selection. By the way, Tiffany used this method.

Grotepass Studio - Describes what it took to build a 22" Tiffany tulip lamp. It's pretty complete, though the email address was bad. And just as a side note, though the lamp came out looking nice, the cutting was awful... Judge for yourself.

The Glass Museum - The Glass Museum has many articles about glass in general.

Stained Glass Ergonomics for Workbench - A thesis on the ergonomics on a workbench.

The Magic of Dichroic Glass - Ever wonder how they make Dichroic glass? This page will explain the process.

The Stained Glass Biz - This is a cool place. It has a stained glass chat room, free patterns, a gallery, a glass locator and MSDS Sheets. And for those who don't know what MSDS is, it stands for Material Safety Data Sheet. It shows what chemicals are in the this we use for stained glass, and what not to do with them. I give it five stars.


TUTORIAL's, TIP's and HOW TO's

NewNancy Weavers Stained Glass - A beginners tutorial on stained glass.

NewWarm Glass - Tips, tutorial's, safety, and everything else you need to work with warm and hot glass. This site is dedicated to just Warm glass.

NewArt Glass Art - They offer tips and tutorial's for stained glass. They offer tutorial's for making a brass came panel and how to make a proportional octagon panel. While your there check out the commercial window and door installations they made.

NewStained Glass Source - Tips for the beginner. Scoring, soldering and finishing.

The Basic Soldering & De soldering Guide by Alan Winstanley - This is a guide for people having trouble soldering. It's designed for electronic users, however most of these topics can be applied to stained glass soldering.

9 Ways in Acquiring a Light Box - Describes different sources to get light boxes from.

Stained Glass Archive - They have a whole bunch of stained glass tips, as well as hot and warm glass tips.

Build your own giant rock tumbler - It's a pretty neat idea. They built a giant rock tumbler using an old tire, how's that for recycling.

Glass Guy's Home page - He has hints and help for the topic of sandblasting.

The Next Step - Stained Glass Stepping Stones - This is a site that pretty much poo-poo's all the other stepping stones out there. It shows how their stepping stones are way better then everyone else's. However at the same time, they give enough explanation that you can apply it to your own craft.

GLOSSARIES & DICTIONARIES FOR GLASS

Glass Online - Illustrated Glass Dictionary - I havn't found the illustrated part yet, but it's a pretty darn complete dictionary about glass.

PPG Glass - Glossary of glass Terms - A long list of glass and plastic terms.

Glass Encyclopedia - Need to know a term in glass? This is the place for you. Explanations with pictures.

MISCELLANEOUS SITES THAT CAN BE USED IN STAINED GLASS:

Electronix Express (A Division of R.S.R. Electronics, Inc.) - They sell mostly electronics, multimeters, kits, etc. But they also have a wide variety of Weller soldering irons, and other general soldering supplies. This will bring your directly to the soldering index.

The American Craft Festival - They list different craft links, such as glass, pottery, leather, wood, etc.

The Glass Geek - An art glass informational archive. A site that has links to many different forms of stained glass.

Catch the Light - A bunch of stained glass links, and stained glass related tools.

LOUIS COMFORT TIFFANY RELATED PAGES

NewPaul Crist Lecture - Tiffany and Art Glass: The Evolution of an Art Form - He gives an in depth of how tiffany used his glass, and what colors and textures were best for each item. There are no pictures though, just descriptions.

Tiffany Windows: A service for Investors and Collectors - A site with many photos of Tiffany's stained glass work, along with his water colors. A section showing the different types of glass Tiffany used, may also be helpful to you. There are other resources as well.

Louis Comfort Tiffany at The Metropolitan Museum of Art - The title says it all. The Metropolitan Museum of Art ran a Tiffany exhibit. It features a few windows and some other Tiffany related items.

American Red Cross - Virtual Museum - 1900-1919 - The name pretty much says it all. Basically one day I was look for Tiffany windows and this site popped up. Apparently the American Red Cross commissioned a few windows from Tiffany Studios. There are 3 pictures here.

Matchinoff Studios, Contemporary and Tiffany Reproduction Stained Glass - They have Tiffany windows and Tiffany lamps here. I can't tell you how original they are, but they are at least Tiffany. The pictures are a little small, but there worth a look-see.

A Brief History about Tiffany - The Title says it all, doing a book report on Louis Comfort Tiffany? They have a basic history on that stained glass guy. There's something there with a Real Audio version. Also I saw a pretty nice looking Tiffany window there.

Morse Museum in Orlando, Florida - This is a museum based in Orlando, Florida (USA). I've never been there myself, but as I understand it, it has a very large collection of Tiffany Stained Glass.


FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT RELATED

Oakbrook-Esser Studios Inc - They design in Frank Lloyd Wright style windows and lamps. There's information here describing his work.

SERVICES

Red Mountain Stained Glass - He uses software to computerize your drawings.

Trent's Custom Beveling - They make bevels to your specifications. Just like the guy above.Located in Vancouver, Washington - Ships Internationally


STAINED GLASS SCHOOLS

The Studio of The Corning Museum of Glass - From what I can tell this school is related to hot glass. They're located in Corning, NY.

Pilchuck Glass School - This is the place that I keep hearing about. They teach glass blowing, glass painting and glass casting. There's also flame working, and kiln forming. It's fairly pricey, but there really aren't A lot of glass schools that teach hot glass related things. Mainly because of the cast amount of space the equipment takes up. It's located in Stanwood, WA.

Canberra School of Art - They teach courses in glass blowing, glass painting, glass printing, glass casting, cutting, and pate de verre. It's located somewhere in Australia, sorry that's the best I could find.

UIAH Department of Ceramics and Glass - They have an assortment of hot glass related items. You could even get a Doctor of the Art's degree, whatever that is. Located in Helsinki, Finland.


STAINED GLASS HISTORY

NewEarthlore - The History of the Rose Window - Doing research on where the infamous Rose window came from? This page explains where it came from, and what it's trying to express.

PFG - About Glass - All about glass, from ancient times to today.


ASSOCIATIONS

Society of Glass - The name pretty much says it all. Though I couldn't find a good explanation of what they do. But it could interest someone, so now it's here.

RAGS - Retailers of Art Glass and Supplies - This is the place to come and talk to other retailers. They have pictures and helpful links.

The Association of Stained Glass Lamp Artists - It's a group based in the state of Washington, that helps keep the stained glass lamp alive. It's $10 a year, and there are seminars held every so often, to improve your skills. They also sell a calendar of lamps, and have some of pictures of lamps as well.


DESIGNING HELP

This section contains places to "borrow" ideas from. Things that you may need to make one day, and need a resource.

Therese's Sewing and Craft Links - By the name you would assume that it's a sewing page. And you would be right, it is. But there is a whole section about Celtic knots.


ONLINE MESSAGE BOARDS

Warm Glass Bulletin Board - A message board dealing only with warm glass. By the way, warm glass refers to the type that's heated in a kiln, not the type that you sat on.

The Stained Glass Exchange - A young message board, with tips and other stained glass related items.
