Dictionaries, Phone books, Maps
And Other General Reference Links

These links have nothing to do with stained glass. All the links here are places I go to. Most of them are useful sites, that may help you. I also have my favorite phone books, maps, and computer news related links. You'll find a plethora of information here.

Any links that have an Update by it has a new address. So be sure to update your bookmarks.

TRANSLATORS

Here's a bunch of odd ball translator sites. Some are for language some are not.

Travlang's - Translating Dictionaries - These are language translators, 16 different languages to choose from. Almost all of them can translate into each other.

Alta Vista's Translator - This one is pretty good. It does several languages. You can either put a selection of words into it's box, or put a web address into the box. However it the translator has a limit of words it will do. Also it doesn't do all of the words. This tool is useful to translate foreign e-mail, or web pages.

Bilingual Dictionaries - This site provides links to other pages that translate languages. Most of these sites convert on a word by word bases.

UNUSUAL SEARCH ENGINES

These search engines are very different to the other's you've ran into. But they're still rather useful, if needed.

Instant Technologies, Ltd. - Missing Persons Search - This is a missing persons search. Enter in the info and see if your missing. Or i suppose you can see if someone else is missing.

Ancestry.com - There are two section sin this site one that you pay and one that is free. I use the one that is free. Ancestry.com can search for long lost relatives. Or use their death search, and see if anyone died with your name.

Price Watch - Price Watch will let you know what the current prices are on quite a few items. Including computers, cameras and computer games.

Trade Show Central - Looking for a trade show in your area or one to go to? Or maybe a seminar? this is a precise search engine that will look up just trade shows and seminars.

DICTIONARIES, THESAURUSES, GLOSSARY'S, and ACRONYMS

The collection I have here are useful and useless, but there all usable. Some are really strange, some are more suited for school.

Computer Glossary's / Dictionaries

U-Geek Glossary - U-Geek is a computer news e-zine. Though this is listed in another section, I'm linking you right to his glossary. His search may have words that the other glossary's don't have.

Dictionaries

Merrium - Webster - They make dictionaries, so the information should be accurate. They have a dictionary and thesaurus here.

Jewelers Dictionary - This site is pretty neat if your into jewelry.

More Dictionaries - This site provides links to other sites that provides more links, to hopefully more dictionaries.

The CMU Pronouncing Dictionary - Enter a word, and it will break down the word so you can pronounce it. It's a little confusing, mainly because it doesn't have the usual symbols above the letters, it instead uses extra letters. Example: Crunchy Frog becomes K R AH N CH IY - F R AA G.

Biographical Dictionary - Doing a book report on some dead guy? Then do a biographical search, they have the histories of corpses through out history. They also have living people as well, and their information is a little more extensive. You can search by name, keyword or by date.

BioTech's Life Science Dictionary - What can I say, it's a search engine about science.

Chemical Acronyms Database - Ever wondered what certain chemical things stood for? Doing a report in school and left you book there? Maybe you'll get the info you need here.

NetLingo: The Internet Language Dictionary - Are you internet savvy? Do you know all of your terms? Do you even want to know? this site has a search engine based just on internet words. It also has a smiley face database you know ---> :) and what they mean.

MaGiK's Search Engines - He has a search engine of search engines. It's one of those sites where you put the word your looking for in, and choose the dictionary.

Hypertext Webster Gateway - Type in a word, get a response, then you can click on the words displayed for further meaning.

WWWebster Dictionary - It's another online dictionary, meant for your regularly searched words. The output looks like a dictionary down to the pronunciation. It will also give you a spelling list, in case you spelled something wrong, (it's a lot easier to do that then to look up a word you can't spell in the first place in the dictionary to see how it's spelled).

One Look Dictionaries - This is a list of dictionary related links, including translating dictionaries.

Translation Dictionaries - This site has a ton of language dictionaries. Though each dictionary may only have a few words in it. But there all phrases that are unflattering in almost every way. Now you can curse or insult anyone in almost any language!!!

Encyclopedia's

Britannica - They used to have (and maybe still do), a huge set of expensive encyclopedias. I think every house hold with parents from 1960's and below has a set of these. Usually it's from 1964. Anyway they're finally online now with current information.

Encyclopedia.com - The name says it all. It's an online free encyclopedia featuring over 14,000 articles from the The Concise Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia, Third Edition.

Acronyms

Acronym Finder - So far this is the best acronym finder that I've seen.

Acronyms and Abbreviations - Another Acronym search, this one also does abbreviations. Which means that you can use it for a country extension search.

USPS Official Abbreviations - The United States Postal Service set up a site explaining what the abbreviations are on the mail we get. They define street name suffixes, state names, and a few other things.

Medical Acronyms - There are all sorts of medical meanings here.

Anagrams

Brendan's On-Line Anagram Generator - Name says what it does. Enter a word or set of words and a new word comes out using those letters. Cat's sure are tasty, becomes, SCARE TEA AT RUSTY. There's a 15 character limit.

Main Sanitary Nag (Anagram Insanity) - Hey more anagrams. It's not as big as some other sites, but it makes words that make more sense (not just words that happen to fit). For example: Shoot Clown becomes Town School, click on it, and find out why I used that example. (Clown go away and clown be gone turned up no results).

Scrabble - I needed to find anagram generators so I can cheat in Scrabble. They have a anagram search and a small dictionary.

Thesauruses

Roget's Internet Thesaurus - It's a pretty good thesaurus, it's a little confusing to use though.

General Reference

The Reference Shelf - This site has a list of links for the various things that I have on this page.

My Virtual Reference Desk - This place has tons of links. And it's update weekly.

Abbreviations

State Abbreviations - Displays a short list of the United States Abbreviations.

NOAH NY Online Access to Health - It's another medical search engine. It searches it's own database for the answer.

MedicineNet (TM) - This site has quite a bit of info, it has a disease search, drug search, medical dictionaries, health facts, and first aid info. Along with the latest medical news. It has an index type search, the results are thorough, and in easy enough to understand terms.

Official American Medical Association (AMA) - This is meant mainly for doctors, it has a physician search, and a search for medical news.

Medicine Online - This is another disease look up, but this one specializes in cancer. The results are rather doctor like.

The Merck Manual - You may have seen this in a hard copy edition, reading it will scare the living daylights out of you. This is the online version of that. it mainly looks at current articles when it does a search. The results are difficult to read do to the doctor lingo babble. But I'm providing this link as a last hope search.

General Health Info

Doctor's Guide to the Internet - This has current medical news, new drug news, along with new medical links.

Drug Searches

Street Drug Reference Guide - Even wonder what the kids are talking about, are they really talking about drugs? Or are you just curious what they are calling your favorite drug used as a kid? Drug - Device - Procedure Index - This site offer's a brief explanation of the thing your looking for.

It will give you the specifics on that drug, side effects, interactions, and even a price guide for that particular drug. It also gives dosage amounts. PHONE BOOKS ONLINE

Phone Book Lists

World Pages - They claim you can find the world here, but I only see the United States, and Canada. They have a white pages and yellow pages section.Along with maps of the US and Canada.

Reverse Searches

A reverse search is where you can search for someone's name by using their phone number. This is especially useful when your looking for a job. In the paper they list just their number. You look up their number, and find out who they are, and where their located. Here's various links I've collected.

Useless Phone Things

Dial ABC - This site allows you to enter your phone number and get possible words out of the numbers. They have it in English, German and Dutch. I guess it's useful if your in a business and want people to type in a phrase instead of a number.

MAPS

Everything here is map related, some has driving instructions.

Driving Instructions

Rand McNally - The map making people have their own map's now. You can find a single house, or have driving instructions. They cover the United States and Canada. However I don't know it's accuracy, it couldn't find my house, and it took a long time not finding it too.

Maps On Us - You need to sign up for this service, but it is free. It needs your information so it can keep track of what addresses you put in (for your own future reference). This will give you detailed turn-by-turn driving instructions. It know what streets are one way (but doesn't actually show you). I found it has about a 200 - 300 mile radius. You can even insert a middle stop (like a rest area). The results also mention mow long it will take and how many miles. It's one of my favorite map sites, because it has a avoid highways search.

Infoseek Driving Instructions - This is better for those people who are squeamish about putting their personal info online. Enter your starting address, and your ending address and your done. You can choose a door-to-door search or a city-to-city search.

Map Quest - This one is just like the info seek one, for all I know it is the same one. But maybe they just stole the coding, in any case one may be down so use this one.

General Maps

Yahoo - Maps - This is another simple map search.

Maps On Us - General Map - This will bring you to a general map search. You don't need to sign up to use this one.

USEFUL TOOLS

Exploratorium - There's lot's of education things to do here.

Chucks Produce Talk - I saw this guy on the news once (a good thing, no he didn't kill anyone, as far as I know anyway). But even if he does kill as a hobby, that doesn't relate to this page. Basically he has tons of tips to pick out your fruits and veggies in the store. Like the melon thump test (not sure if that one is in there though).

The Interactive Currency Converter - This converter converts currency of different countries and by different types.

The Compendium of HTML Elements - This place explains all the HTML codes.

USELESS TOOLS

These sites are for people with nothing better to do with their time.

Bev-Net - I came across this site looking for information about water with caffeine in it. This site is neat, but kind of pointless. It has over one hundred beverage names, what flavors they have, how they taste, what kind of container they're in. He even has a grade for each one. I've never heard of any of these.

Cheese Info.... Yes cheese info - Can I have some cheeeeeese pleeeese? I'm sorry sir but we don't actually have any cheese... Your not much of a cheese shop then are you? No sir I guess not.... I don't remember why I need this, I guess I was looking for pictures or something. This site is all about cheese. Cheese by country, cheese by texture, cheese by name. Go through this site and you'll be a real cheese geek.

Fromages - In the mood for french cheese? This site is great for any french cheese fan or club, or club sandwich. They must have over 7 dozen cheeses listed by milk. But here's the cool part, every cheese description has a cheese picture by it. They tell you when to buy it, what it looks like, and just how yummy it is. Mmmmm hmmmm... I can just smell it now. By the way, some of those cheeses look pretty disgusting.

The Useless Information Page - This place has a bunch of fun fact, and trivia no-one ever wanted to know. It's fun none the less.

LAW INFORMATION

Find Law - It's a Yahoo! based search engine....So good luck finding anything... Just kidding, really. Everything should be fairly easy to find here.

The Law Crawler - Sounds like a creepy bug, huh? I guess it could be related, anyway this site searches for other places on the web that has your law topic on it.

Patent and Trademark Information

IBM Intellectual Property Search - You can search by name, keywords, patent numbers etc.

United States Copyright Office - This site has copyright information. They have lot's of information on this topic, and you can even register something of yours there.

Fraud Info

Web Assurance Bureau - This site is like the Better Business Bureau for the web. You can look up a company on the web, and see if they have any complaints on them.

Internet Scam Busters - Get burned by a contest? Getting too much spam mail? This site tells you how to deal with it.

The Better Business Bureau - Ah, the BBB, they could help you out. Need to complain about a company? Or wonder how many complaints there are on a company? This place will help you.

Speeding Ticket Help

DMV Links - A list of DMV's around the country.

How to fight a speeding ticket - Will it help, try it and find out.

The Speed Trap Registry - Do you like speeding? But don't like getting caught by the MAN. Well this site is for you... This site lists fairly up to date information of where all the speed traps are. There reported by people on the road and simply call them in. He has reports covering the US and foreign countries. The site is a little messy to look at, but it's pretty neat. Some of the information is so exact it will tell you what kind of car it is (if it's unmarked), what tree it's hiding behind, and maybe even a picture what it looks like.

Tax Help

Problem Alerts - IRS - They have a list of possible tax problems.

AUTO INFORMATION

I've found a lot of good info here, whenever I needed to know how much an old cars is, or a new one.

Buyers Guides

CarPrice.Com - If your buying a new or used car, go here. This place will price new and used cars in the US and Canada.

Auto-By-Tel - You may have hear their annoying little jingle on TV and radio, well here they are. Supposedly you can buy cars through them at a discounted price.

Microsoft's Car Point - This is an awsome site. You can search for new and used car prices. You can view your car in Quicktime VR. Everything is laid out in an easy to use format.

AutoSite - They have new and used car specs. Each car has tech specs, warranty info, and all of the good stuff.

Kelly Blue Book - Normally this is the guide you go to the library too look at, or buy. This is a free service, it lists everything you need to know about your used car. Like how much money it's worth. There's also a lot of new car info here, like dealer's invoice pricing. I've used this site a lot, and it's quite useful.

Edmund's Automobile Buyer's Guides - This site is similar to Kelly's Book Book. It's packed full of useful information, if you want to buy a car.

WEATHER RELATED

These are all site's I've found useful or neat. Most of these only cover the United States.

Sites with Radar

AccuWeather - This is a very nice site. They have a fairly live radar update, about 10 minutes or so. they have a 7 and a 10 day forecast, even an hour by hour forecast. It's a very nice site, i use it whenever bad weather comes my way. There's a pay section, for the live up to date things - good if your a weather man.

IntelliCast - They cover the whole world. News channels use them. They have local forecasts and radar shots from all around the world.

Real Time Weather Data - You need JAVA to use this site. It only covers the United States. You can see still or moving composite images of a given area over the United States. You can see visible, infrared, and water vapor loops. It's kind of neat and kind of useless. Seeing a hurricane from above with the light hitting the right way, is pretty cool though.

The Weather Channel - They have a TV show, it's called The Weather Channel. They have a web site, it's called The Weather Channel. Pretty simple. They have local radar, they cover the earth. Local forecasts and I believe even some news clips.

Weather Labs - Enter a zip code, get a forecast. You can browse the world, but I think the dopplar and satellite imagery only covers the United States.

Tv Weather - Has every single town in the entire United States. But just basic information.

Just Storm Tracking

Lowe's Storm 2000 - Basically it's just information on violent weather. It also provides links to local weather stations.

Interactive Weather Information Network from the National Weather Service - Shows all the current watches and warnings, it refreshes every 60 seconds.

Weather Information Browser - Select the time zone, state then town, and it will show you the latest warning, or roundup.

Emergencies

Emergency Net - What to do in almost every king of emergency. I think the only one's they don't cover are monster attack and alien invasion.

FEMA - Main Page - This brings you right to their front door. FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency provides help when an emergency occurs. They have some neat storm animations, useful links, and helpful advice.

FEMA - Flooding - This will bring you right to the flooding section. We had a storm at one point and it took me forever to find any kind of good way to clean the water. This site should help you.

FEMA - Preparedness - This is a list provided by FEMA - for emergency readiness.

FEMA - Winter Storms - It provides checklist for the winter. There are also weather related links.

Satellite Services Division - Shows the latest water vapor images from over the oceans.

JEWISH SITES

Though their are quite a few jewish pages, these are the most useful one's that I've found. If your not Jewish, it's ok, no one's perfect.

Jewish Music.COM - Dyeing for some Jewish music? I know you are, it's like a CD Now, but only with Jewish music.

The Jewish Bible - This is a really neat site. They have blessings, torah and hafarot portions (all of them I think). There's a bar/baht mitzvah portions too. You can search by your birthday, it gives you the prayer you need. It gives you the choice to see the prayer in it's native torah format, or with vowels, or transliteration, or translation of the meaning, or hear it as a cantor sings or reads it. Do you need your Sabbath prayers quickly? This page has the portions you need. They show it in a translation form, along with it's translation. And if your too lazy to read you can hear it in Real Audio.

Yiddish Stuff

One day I was looking for Yiddish phrases, here are some interesting sites I've found.

Uncomplimentary Yiddish Expressions - Ever wonder what the old ladies in the jewish senior resting home is saying about you? Read here and find out.

The Alternate Yiddish Dictionary - This is from that large collection of dictionaries I have higher up on the page. This will bring you right to the Yiddish insult page.
