FOR SELF-DEFENSE & CONFIDENCE

The SHODOKAN welcomes your interets in the martial arts and the programs of self-defense and physical fitness offered at our dojo.
All of our programs are suited for men and women of any age, and for children over 7 years old. You do not have to be an athlete to become proficient in these arts. In addition to self-defense, training in the martial arts includes the development of the following:
            SELF-CONFIDENCE PHYSICAL FITNESS

MENTAL AND MORAL QUALITIES CHARACTER FORMATION

JUDO, The gentle way, is an art, a sport, and a means of self-defense. Before learning how to throw an opponent, or being thrown him or herself, the student is first taught the history, customs and courtecies of Judo; the art of body protection (ukemi, the art of falling without pain or injury); and the principles of balance. In addition to the 40 throwing techniques, Judo includes hold-down techniques, choking techniques, and arm locks... all of which may be safely used in the contests of sport Judo as well as for self-defense. Advanced students learn atemi waza ... striking of the vital points of the body. All students (especially children) are taught the neccessity of self-discipline and self-control in the application of this knowledge... even in an emergency.
All of the black belt Judo instructors atSHODOKAN are registered with the United States Judo Federation(USJF) and/or United States Judo Association(USJA). The school is registered by the USJF, USJA, USJI, and New England Judo Association. Judo promotions are in accordance with the standards of the USJF and the New England Judo Association and are recognized world-wide.
