At the first blush, Timothy Dalton's unexpected appearance in the
role of a presenter in a popular-science film about declining species of white wolves is not
unexpected for me. First of all, after his recent performance in "Tales from the Crypt" (1992) in
a part of werewolf, i.e. a man, who becomes a man-eating wolf, the willing to right
himself in the eyes of "complitely innocent" animals seems to be natural. Secondly, being at that
time in the status of James Bond, Timothy Dalton, probably, felt the utility of this journey to
check his readiness to the new tests of Bond serial. Thirdly, travellings and "wind of pilgrimage"
give you a very good chance to make your life more multifarious. And, at last, and it's the thing,
that comes before everything, in this documentary film Dalton has got a chance to continue the theme
of a self-giving love, which he has begun almost 25 years ago in
"El Hombre...".
Elsewise I can't explain the readiness of an actor, who
has so high level of mastership, to work without a script and with a risk not to get a markworthy
material for the future film, walking around the desert regions behind Arctic Circle on the
look-out for wolves during some months.
I think, Mr. Dalton will not take offence at me, if I'll say, that,
I am sure, "Wolves" is the only film, where the actor doesn't play a role - but simply shows his
kindness to these rare, beatiful, proud creatures of Nature, feels the joy of discovery,
inspiration of researcher, heartache on barbaric depopulation of these amazing animals.
