SCI first came to India at the request of Dr. Rajendra Prasad a social worker who later
became the First President of the Republic India, in 1934 when a team of European
volunteers along with Pierre Cerosole undertook reconstruction work after the earthquake
in Bihar.

Since that time SCI India organizes many voluntary work camps and other actions with
state branches/ groups in seminars to get people involved, trained, motivated and
orientated in social action and voluntary work. It takes a lead in activities and issues
related to forestry, environment, refugees, peace, communal harmony, disabled and
wimens' issues.

AIMS and objectives of SCI are:

To promote peace and international solidarity in the belief that all people are capable of
living together with mutual respect and without recourse to violence to solve conflicts
between  nations, communities and people.  SCI India has branches and groups in Delhi,
Maharastra, West Bengal, Karnataka and Tamilnadu.  It has its national secretariat in
Delhi.  All the groups has their own Group Secretaries, committees and programs as per
the need of the local area.  All the Group Secretaries and key functionaries of the group
would represent in the national committees and working committees of SCI India.  SCI
India has  two governing bodies i.e National Council and Central Working Committee.  
The National Council meets once in a year and takes policy decisions and the Central
Working Committee meets once in four months and gives directin to the National
Secretary.

Activities:

International Workcamps, Volunteer Placements, Long term projects, Emergency relief
and rehabilitation work and resource and support services.

SCI India has two long term projects viz. one for the urban development situated at
Nangloi about 40 kilometers from Delhi and one in Vedanthangal Village, Kanchepuram
District of Tamilnadu State   PIN : 603 314.
