AKADEMI KASTAM DIRAJA MALAYSIA (AKMAL) BACKGROUND

AKMAL was established in 1956 on a 11-acre piece of land on Jalan Penghulu Abas, Bukit Baru, Melaka. In the early stages it is known by the name of the Federal Custom Training Center which consists of two building blocks for offices, classrooms and dormitory buildings.

In 1957, the Training Center changed its name to the Federal Customs Training School which conducted retraining courses for Customs Officers. In 1960, its function was expanded by tracing the Assistant Customs Authority.

With the award of the Royal title by His Majesty the King on April 2, 1963 the name of the Federal Custom Training School was changed to the Royal Malaysian Custom Training College.

In 1987, the name of the Training College was changed to the name of the Royal Malaysian Customs College in line with its increasingly important role. Office buildings, dormitories, college rooms have been added and upgraded. Training facilities include a hall, a surau, a games court, a gym, a library and a swimming pool.

In October 1989, the Royal Malaysian Customs was upgraded to the Royal Malaysian Customs Academy in line with his development and abilities as an Academy.

In 1990, the AKMAL Enlargement project started involving the construction of offices, lecture halls, auditorium, dormitories, stadiums, games courts and laboratories. The project was completed in 1991 and was inaugurated in 1993.

With the expansion of the AKMAL, courses can be implemented not only for departmental staff but for other agencies and the World Customs Organization.

AKMAL's main campus is located in Bukit Baru Melaka. There are four (4) branches namely AKMAL Wilayah Sabah, AKMAL Region Sarawak, AKMAL Wilayah Langkawi and AKMAL Rantau Panjang.
