This bus is known as "The Flamingo Key" now. It has since been converted to a motor home. It is a 1972 Gillig with a fresh Detroit Diesel and an Allison six-speed automatic transmission. This Gillig is currently owned by Celia Goin of Virginia, and has since been converted into a motor home. It was orphaned by the Klamath Falls S.D. in Oregon a few years ago. The following two images are of a Gillig that belongs to, or formerly belongs to North Fork Union School District. This bus was featured as School Bus of the Month at the School Bus Yard for November 1997. It appears to be a 743 series Gillig. These photos were taken by Jim Alexander in Macungie PA in 1996. This is definitely one Gillig I wish I had!! |
This is actually an image of what it looks like behind the left side headlight-turn signal cluster panel. The panel is a swivel door that gives access to the various relays and wiring harnesses underneath the dashboard. This is the relay setup on my Gillig. Below the green panel of wiring and relays is the air valves that are attached to the brake pedal and the sensor equipment that is attached to the gas pedal. The various lines you see are the air lines for the brakes. |
Now here's an interesting looking Gillig. Its a 1954 Gillig 590 converted into a motorhome. The roof is rusted near the drip rail above the windows, but overall, this Gillig looks like its in reasonably well condition. It was photographed in June of 2001 in Escondido, San Diego County, California. |
Heres a 1966 Gillig/Ford Conventional. This bus is seen next to a full size type "D" Gillig. Not much is known about this bus. |

I couldn't dig any further information on this bus, but it is definately a 1980-1982 Gillig. I've been told that it has a Detroit 671, but I could be wrong. This makes another Gillig I wish I definately had! |
