The Gillig Phantom school bus started production in the spring of 1985, as the replacement to the classic Gillig Transit Coach school bus. This design carried over from the Gillig Phantom city transit bus, and the only change was a vertical driver's windshield and a rear emergency exit window, which the city transit did not have. Other changes were an all-new body design, and greater durability. The only drawback was that not very many sold. From 1985 to 1993, only about 45 units per year sold. 1993 marked the last year that Gillig Corporation quit making school buses. |

Pacific Coachways Phantom |
The Pacific Coachways Gillig Phantom school bus, viewed in the following links, is a unique Gillig. First, this Gillig Phantom was the FIRST prototype for the Phantom school bus. It was built in 1985, and is powered by a Caterpillar3208 diesel and is driven by an Allison Automatic. It was sold to PCW because it could never be used for a regular service school bus. It has a transit start setup (run switch) and many other features that are not allowed on school buses today. All photos and the above information provided by Eric Gregory |
