From the Jurassic to the Last Pleistocene several dinosaurs roamed the forest and savanna areas of Trinidad.

One of these dinosaurs was the Giant Ground Sloth. They trived during the ice ages when there was no body of water separating Trinidad from the South American continent.

This large animal was able to reach as high as 17 feet and weighed more than five tons. Although the Giant Ground Sloth had huge claws it was a herbivour. They had small
blunt teeth used for grinding vegetation.

Examination of their fossil skeletons showed that they were capable of standing on their hind legs. A leg bone belonging to thgis prehistoric creature was found in Southern Trinidad. Today it is on exhibit at the National Museum of Trinidad.

There are many other dinosaurs that inhabited Trinidad and many fossils still to be found, but unfortunately very little is known about what dinosaurs lived here. This is because of the lack palaeontological excavation and study done in Trinidad.

One of the best places to find fossils is at the Pilch Lake where fossils are known to have emerged from beneath the pitch.
