Charles Messier was an 18th Century French Astronomer who compiled a list of approximately 100 diffuse objects in the night sky. Messier was a comet hunter, and actually created his catalog to eliminate objects that could be mistaken for comets. The result was a collection of some of the most beautiful objects to be observed with a telescope."Messier Marathons" are a common event among today's astronomy clubs. The participants try to observe every object in the Messier Catalog in a single night.
