District Police Trainee Patch 1981

District Police Trainee Patch
In 1981 Chief Joseph Long, Jr. and Officer Laura Lorman of the West Valley College District Police along with Marge Faulstich, head of the Administration of Justice Department at West Valley College, started the District Police Trainee program. The idea was to have Administration of Justice students do foot patrols on the interior of campuses to be "extra eyes and ears" for the sworn officers. The students patrolled West Valley College, Mission College and a satellite campus at Leigh High School at night.

The patch for the District Police Trainee’s was a simple design, a top arch angling down to a point at the bottom. The colors were a blue background with yellow lettering with a solid 7 point star in the middle. The top letters read West Valley College District which was the name of the college district at the time. The bottom read District Police Trainee, the name of the program and what the Administration of Justice students were called.

The Administration of Justice students were required to provide their own dark blue pants and dark shoes. The District Police provided a white shirt, black jacket, rain gear, badge (which was shared but worn by whoever was on foot patrol that night), and a college radio to contact a sworn officer.

The District Police provided the students with training in first-aid, C.P.R., basic self-defense and radio procedures. Because this was an Administration of Justice class, the students also received college credit. To receive college credit the students had to pass the first-aid and C.P.R. training their first semester. Then they had to pass a radio code test their second semester. The third semester students were required to put together a job resume. The idea was to prepare Administration of Justice students for a job in law enforcement. Also, the on the job training gave the students a chance to see if law enforcement was a career they really wanted to pursue.
