Campus Service Officer Patch 1982-1983

CSO Patch 1982-1983
The District Police Trainee patch was changed in 1982. Local agencies were employing Community Service Officers or CSO’s. CSO’s were civilian employees who would take prior misdemeanor reports, enforce local ordinances and be extra eyes and ears for the sworn officers. Although the District Police Trainees did not take prior misdemeanor reports nor enforce local ordinances, they were a support group for the sworn officers and would handle some non-enforcement details to free the sworn officers to handle more urgent details. Because of this, the title was changed from District Police Trainee to Campus Service Officer. The overall look of the patch stayed the same, but the name on the bottom was just changed from Police Trainee to Campus Service Officer.

The current police chief at that time, Lloyd Thomas Mitchell, III, came from a municipal police department that had Community Service Officers, and he made use of the program to expand services provided by the department. Overall, the program was still the same, but additional CSO’s were hired. There were more CSO’s on foot patrol and assigned other small projects within the department.

The uniforms for the CSO's remained the same. The Administration of Justice students were required to provide their own dark blue pants and dark shoes. The District Police provided a white shirt, black tie, black jacket, and rain gear. Some extra badges were found and CSO’s were assigned their own badges.
