West Valley College Police Patch 1971-1979![]() |
The patch changed in 1971. It took on a similar design to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) patch. Using the same shape and color scheme as the CHP patch the college logo was put into the 7 point star. The college logo was circular lettering which said West Valley College District. The college logo shows the Saratoga hills and a redwood tree. The year 1963 is the year the college was established. Above the name of the department, West Valley College Police, was used.
The department at that time went from a student force to a sworn force. There were 3 full time officers, 2 part time officers and a chief working at that time. The officers of the department got their police powers from the Santa Clara County Sheriff who made them "special deputies." In 1973, there was a separate section established in the California Penal Code for community college police. The uniforms were also changed to navy blue pants and light blue shirts. A new campus was being built in the city of Santa Clara. Until it was finished, there was an annex campus in the city of Santa Clara the officers had to patrol. |
