Current Police Patch 1986-Present![]() |
The administrators at Mission College felt the college had no identity. With the name of West Valley Joint Community College District, it was thought no one knew of the Santa Clara campus. A committee was put together to rename the college district. The name that was chosen and is used today is the West Valley-Mission Community College District. This called for a name change on the police patch; however, West Valley-Mission Community College District was a long name to put on a patch. The chief of police at the time, Paul Wiedemann, had found some of the patches that were never used. He liked the design in that it was straight forward and to the point, "Police." Taking that design Paul Wiedemann changed the word College to Mission on the circular lettering inside the seven point star around the college logo. It now read West Valley Mission District. This is now the current patch used by the department.
Two years after the patch change the uniform changed from a light blue shirt to navy blue. All the municipal police departments in Santa Clara County had switched to these uniforms in the 1980's. Since its P.O.S.T. (Peace Officers Standards in Training) certification, the West Valley-Mission District Police now adheres to the standards established by P.O.S.T. The department must meet these standards in hiring and ongoing training to keep its certification. |
