the theme song

Season 1 opening credits

It's called 'That 70's Song' but was based on the song by Big Star called 'In the Street'. The first season theme was sung by Todd Griffin but now there is a new theme recorded by Cheap Trick (ugh). You buy it on the That '70s Show Rockin' Album. The first theme was available on a cd single in copies of Rolling Stones magazine (with Will Smith on the cover in 1998) with additional lyrics written by Ben Vaughn. Todd Griffin did the vocals. Danny Masterson says "Hello, Wisconsin!" at the end. I used to think it was Topher Grace and then Ashton Kutcher. Aw damn, I'm usually right too (yeah right). I keep hearing that the cast does back vocals for the first theme but I just don't hear it. I think they do on the show but not on the cd.

Since everyone keeps emailing me asking how to get a copy of the theme song single I'll address that here. I don't know. It is available for auction at Ebay almost all of the time. You can get ripped off there though (not the fault of Ebay and I don't think it happens often) so be careful. It's really not worth the trouble because the song just isn't very good. It makes me cringe whenever I listen to it.

That 70's Song
Hanging out!
Down the Street -
the same old thing!
We did last week
Not a thing to do -
but to talk to you
woaho yeah!
Hello Wisconsin!

The additional lyrics from the cd

Mom and Dad live upstairs
The music's loud
So we don't care
Nixon's gone
But rock lives on
Alright!
We're still rocking in Wisconsin
Oh yeah!
We're still rocking in Wisconsin
That's right!
Steal a car
And drive on down ... pick me up
And we'll drive around
Not a thing to do
But talk to you
Whoah yeah! Hello Wisconsin!
