Girls Meet: Friday, December 3, 1999

The lady Cougars got their season underway on Friday night (12/3/99) with a meet at Kutztown University. While no medals were won, there were some encouraging performances. Springfield started off with a 4 X 800 relay. Team members were Lauren Hutelmyer (2:50); Lisa Cutrufello (3:07), Darcy Borden (3:14), and Maureen Hiller (3:25) -- final time 12:36.7. The next event for Springfield was the 55m hurdles, and Sara Dougherty. Sara is still on the road to recovery from major foot surgery last summer, but was still able to run a 9.7 in the trials to qualify for the finals and finish with a time of 9.4. This is only .2 off Sara's personal best of 9.2. Just wait 'til that foot is 100%! Next, Maureen Hiller ran the 200m in 39.5; not bad for a distance runner. On to the 400m and newcomer Darcy Borden with a time of 78.5. In the second heat of the 800m, after a start that looked like something out of "roller derby," Kate Curran covered the distance in 2:38.0 to place 3rd in her heat. While the running was going on, Jenna Beaver was doing her "thing" at the high jump and placed 9th with a leap of 4' 8". With more than one day of practice Jenna will improve a lot. The Cougar's last race was the 4 X 400. The team of Lauren Hutelmyer (70.4), Kate Curran (70.5), Sara ("I love the 400") Dougherty (78.0), and Lisa Cutrufello (73.8) covered the 1600m in 4:53.8.

Boys Meet: Saturday, December 4, 1999
Coaches Holloway & Curran traveled to Haverford College with this year's small squad for their first meet. Our first and only running event for the afternoon was the Distance Medley Relay. The Springfield team of Joe Fraatz (1200 @ 4:12), Steve Vescovitch (400 @ 60.6), T.J. Urglavitch (800 @ 2:41.6) and Brian Regan (1600 @ 6:10.6) finished 12th in the first heat, with an overall time of 14:04.9. The best was yet to come. In the shot put Senior Chris Avato placed 4th with a throw of 42' 5.75" Nice job Chris!

Girl's meet: Friday, December 10, 1999.

Friday night the girl's team traveled to Lehigh for their second meet of the winter season. The meet started off with Lisa Cutrufello running a personal best in the hurdles of 9.7. In the 200 Lisa came back and ran a 30.4. In the 400, after some confusion about heats and lanes, Lauren Hutelmyer ran a season best time of 68.4. Meanwhile, in the pole vault things were not going well for Sara Dougherty. With only one day of practice Sara was having trouble getting her step in place, and while she was getting more than 2 feet over the bar, she was not able to make the opening height. Back on the track, Kate Curran was running the mile and finished second in her heat and 7th over all with a time of 5:43.5. In the shot put, Amanda Rider threw the 4k implement 23' 5". The last event for Springfield was the 4 X 400m relay. Lauren Hutelmyer started us off with a split of 70.0. Darcy Borden took the baton and covered the distance in 78.4. Next the baton was passed to Jenna ("I've found a new event") Beaver and she ran a 71.5. The anchor duty was given to Casey Horna, who covered the 2 laps in 78.0 sec. Final time for Springfield: 4:58.1

Boy's meet: Thursday, December 18, 1999.

Saturday (Dec. 18) morning the Cougars made the short trip to Haverford College for their second meet of the year. In his first meet, and Springfield's first event, T.J. Urglavitch ran the 200m in 28.9. Next up was Steve Vescovitch in the 400m and Steve ran a personal best indoor time of 58.7-- good enough to place him 2nd in his heat. Brian Regan also ran a personal best time in the mile, covering the distance in 5:55.4. This improved Brian's previous best by over 15 seconds. Adam Dambrink competed in the high jump, and while he was not able to make the opening height he gained valuable experience which will help in our next outing. In the shot put, Chris Avato not only placed 3rd in the meet, but broke his own school record with a put of 44' 4.5". By the way, the old record was 43' 3". Great job boys. Good luck Thursday night at Lehigh!

Boy's meet: Thursday, December 23, 1999.

The boys began their winter holiday with a trip to Lehigh University for their third meet of the winter season. Things started off nicely with Adam Dambrink making the opening height in the high jump with a leap of 5' 3". We have had next to no time to practice this event so making the opening jump is excellent! On the track Steve Vescovitch ran the 200m in a time of 26.3, T.J. Urglavitch covered the 400m in 66.9 and Brian Regan ran the 800m in 2:37.5 Nice work boys! Back at the field events Joe Fraatz had his first chance to pole vault and was not able to make the opening height of 9' 6", but he did have three nice attempts. Again we save the best to last with Chris Avato. Chris not only broke his own school record in the shot put with a put of 46' 1.25" but he won the meet. Great job Chris, keep up the good work.

Girl's meet: Tuesday, January 4, 2000 - Indoor Delcos

What a great meet! The Lady Cougars arrived at Haverford College at 6 PM for the Indoor Delco Meet. Things got underway quickly with Lisa Cutrufello and Sara Dougherty running the 55m hurdles. Both girls ran fine times and made it back for the finals. Lisa turned in a personal best of 9.6. Sara ran 9.3, missing her own school record by .1, but the time was good enough to take the 4th place medal. Over in the shot put, Amanda Rider put the 4K ball 25' 3" for 7th place and a personal best. In the mile, Casey Horna and Maureen Hiller showed "true grit" and finished 6th and 7th in their heat. In the 400, Darcey Borden ran her personal best with a time of 77.0. Next came the 800 with Ann Marie Regan and Lauren Hutelmyer. Ann Marie in her first race after injury covered the distance in 2:59.5 and Lauren was able to turn in a 2:47.1, placing 3rd in her heat. Back to the field events: Jenna Beaver tied for 3rd in the high jump with a vertical leap of 4' 10". In the long jump, Lisa Cutrufello and Sara Dougherty were jumping 12' 5" and 15' 6" respectively. Sara's 15'6" was good enough to bring home the 4th place medal. Right after the long jump came the triple jump, and Sara Dougherty was again up to the task (guess that week in California didn't hurt). Sara jumped 33' 3.5" and earned the third place medal. If you've lost count, that is three events and three medals for "Sara Doc." Very nice!!! Last medal for the ladies came to Kate Curran in the 3000 with an impressive time of 11:18.6 and 3rd place. She really wanted the school record 11:03.9, but that will have to wait until another day. Our last event was the ever popular 4 X 400 relay. The team of Lauren Hutelmyer (68.9), Ann Marie Regan (77.8), Lisa Cutrufello (71.3), and Kate Curran (72.0), ran a season-best time of 4:50.2.

Girl's meet: Friday, January 7, 2000

The Springfield lady tracksters traveled to Lehigh University for their fourth meet of the season, and it was worth the trip. Our 4 X 800 relays started things off when the team of Kate Curran (2:42), Lauren Hutelmyer (2:52), Casey Horna (3:24), and Darcy (thanks for telling Coach Curran I can run the 800) Borden (3:19) placed 7th in their heat with a time of 12:18.7. Over at the hurdles Lisa Cutrufello ran a respectable 9.8, and Sara Dougherty qualified for the finals with a time of 9.6. Darcy Borden returned for the relay event to run the 200 in a time of 34.7 and Kate Curran recovered well enough from the relay to run a 2:39.4 and win her heat. Back to the field events where Lisa Cutrufello jumped 14' 1" in the long jump, and Amanda Rider put the shot 24' 11.75". But the real star of the evening was Sara Dougherty. Sara started off a little shaky, missing her first attempt at 7', but got her act together, and went on to vault 10' in the pole vault to not only win the event, but set a new school indoor record, a new Delaware County record, and a new Delaware Valley Coaches Association record. Congratulations Sara! Congratulations to the rest of the team for a job well done!

Boy's meet: Saturday, January 8, 2000

Springfield boys team took the short list to Haverford College on Saturday night for their third meet of the season. In the running events Steve Vescovitch entered the 200m and ran an impressive 26.6 and placed first in his heat. In the field events Chris Avato continued his medal winning ways with a 46' shot put which placed him third in the event. Good job boys, keep up the good work!

Girl's meet: Friday, January 14, 2000

Friday night the Girl's Winter Track Team traveled to Kutztown University for their fifth meet of the season. Lisa Cutrufello started the meet off for Springfield competing in both the 55m hurdles and the 55m dash. Lisa ran 9.9 in the hurdles and 8.3 in the dash. Maureen Hiller had her first shot at the 400m and covered the distance in 90 sec. Lauren Hutelmyer turned in a 2:49.3 in the 800m. In the field events Jenna Beaver leaped 4' 10" in the high jump for a 5th place medal, and Sara Dougherty long jumped 15', missing a medal by 1 inch. In the triple jump Sara jumped 31' 3.5". The best performance of the evening was probably Amanda Rider. While Amanda did not earn a medal, she improved her personal best in the shot put by almost 24". Amanda put the shot 27'. Nice job Amanda, keep up the good work.

Boys at West Chester: January 22, 2000

Only a small number of the boys team traveled to West Chester for their 4th meet of the season. In the 300 yard run Steve Vescovitch ran a fine time of 37.7 and finished 2nd in his heat. In the 1000 yard Joe Fraatz, not in his usual event, ran 3:10.4 and finished 5th in his heat. In the mile Brian Regan ran 6:08.7 and finished 8th in his heat. Once again Chris Avato was the star of the meet for Springfield with a new school record in the shot put of 47' 2" and a first place. Nice job, Chris!

Girls at Lehigh: January 21, 2000

Friday the Springfield Ladies traveled to Lehigh for their 6th meet of the season. Due to family trips, work, and sickness the Lady Cougars had a smaller than usual squad. In the first event for Springfield Lisa Cutrufello ran the 55m hurdles in 9.8, missing her personal best by only .1 sec. In the same event Sara Dougherty covered the distance in 9.4 sec. to make the finals and came back in the second race in 9.3 to place 8th overall. In the 300 yard race Darcy Borden ran a respectable 49.0. Maureen Hiller ran the 400m for the second week in a row and improved on last week's performance by almost 2 seconds. The star of the evening was probably Casey Horna in the 800m race. Casey ran a 3:08.0 to improve on her personal best by nearly 20 seconds. Great job Casey! Last running event for the Cougars was Kate Curran in the 3000m -- 15 laps around Lehigh's indoor facility. Kate averaged 46 seconds per lap for a final time of 11:39.5. Back in the field events Lisa Cutrufello was long jumping and leaped 13' 9.5". In the pole vault Springfield took two medals. Kate Curran, when she saw only 6 competitors, entered herself and vaulted 7'6" for 4th place. Sara Dougherty for the second pole vault competition in a row brought home the first place medal. Sara "Doc's" 9' vault was not up to par for her, but it was good enough to win.

Girls at Kutztown: January 28, 2000

Friday the girl's team traveled once again up to Kutztown for their 7th meet. Four of the Lady Cougars teamed up to run the 4 X 800 relay: Ann Marie Regan started for Springfield and turned in a 2:55; Ann passed the baton to Lisa Cutrufello, who was able to give us a 3:17; next was Jenna Beaver, who covered the 800m in 3:03; and Casey Horna was our anchor with a 3:25. Meanwhile over at the long jump, Sara Dougherty placed 5th with jump of 15' 8.75", missing her own school record by less than inch. In the hurdles Sara was also able to place well with a time of 9.6. At the shot put, Amanda Rider was able to throw the 8 pound ball 24' 5". Jenna Beaver cleared 4' 8" in the high jump. Back on the track, Darcy Borden ran the 200m in 34.2, Maureen Hiller ran the 400m in 1:30.6, and Lauren Hutelmyer toured the 800m in 2:53.2.

Boys at Lehigh: January 29, 2000

Very small numbers for the boys on Saturday at Lehigh, but they did manage to bring home one second place medal. In the pole vault, Joe Fraatz "no heighted" at 9' 6". Steve Vescovitch placed first in his heat with a time of 26.2. Our best was still to come when Chris Avato placed second in the shot put and took the silver medal with a distance of 46' .75"

Girls at Lehigh: February 4, 2000

In their last regular season winter track meet the Ladies from Springfield traveled to Lehigh University on Friday night. The team of Maureen Hiller, Casey Horna, Lauren (the birthday girl) Hutelmyer, and Ann Marie Regan ran the distance medley relay. Unfortunately some very confusing officiating had the girls run several extra laps, so "splits" were out of the question, but the foursome from Springfield gave it their best effort. Lisa Cutrufello ran her best hurdle time of the season with a 9.7. Darcey Borden covered the 200m in her best time of 33.9, Kate (yes I'm the coach's daughter) Curran ran in the "hot" heat of the mile and ran a 5:55.5. Back at the field events Lisa Cutrufello had trouble getting her steps, but still jumped 13' in the long jump, Amanda Rider put the shot 25' 10," and Jenna Beaver high jumped 4' 10" for a 7th place tie. But Springfield's best performance came in the form of a first place for Sara Dougherty in the pole vault with a vault of 9' 6".

Boys at Lehigh: February 5, 2000

The boys' last meet of the season took place on Saturday (Feb. 5) at Lehigh University. Steve Vescovitch ran his first 55m race of the season and placed in his heat with a 7.5 time, and an overall place of 7th. In his first competition of the season A.J. Nicolella ran the 200m in a time of 27.5. In Springfield's last running event Brian Regan ran the mile and covered the distance in 6:05.3. As usual the best was saved until last. In the shot put Chris Avato placed 3rd with a put of 46' 4.75."

Coaches Carnival at Lehigh: February 12, 2000

On Saturday morning three athletes traveled to Lehigh University with Coach Holloway for the Pennsylvania Track and Field Coaches Association Indoor Carnival. By the time they returned home 8 hours later, they had broken two school records and brought home one gold medal. The first event to start was the girl's pole vault. After two hours of competition, Sara Dougherty had won the gold with a vault of 10' 6", which tied her outdoor personal best and set new indoor school, county, and meet records. Next was boy's shot put. Chris Avato broke his own school record with a heave of 48' 4", over a foot over his previous best. This was good enough for a seventh place overall in a very large field of competitors. Finally, Kate Curran also placed seventh in the 3000 meter run with a time of 11:24.

Girls' Meet of Champions At Lehigh: February 18, 2000

Two of the Lady Cougars traveled to Lehigh on Friday night to compete in the year 2000 version of the Delaware Valley Girl's Track and Field Association Meet of Champions. Several years ago the association decided to award long sleeved tee shirts to the top six places instead of medals for this meet. (Most of the girls have been winning medals all winter long, and a shirt would be a nice change). Springfield brought home two of the coveted shirts. In the pole vault Sara Dougherty placed second with a vault of 9 feet, and in the mile run, Kate Curran ran a personal best of 5:34.27 (FAT) and placed 4th.

Boys' Meet of Champions At Lehigh: February 19, 2000 Saturday night at Lehigh was the Boy's Meet of Champions. This meet brings together medal winners from Division I and Division II. Springfield's only entry was shot putter Chris Avato. Chris has medaled in almost every meet he was entered in this season. However, Saturday night was not to be a real good night for Chris. While Chris put the shot over 46', a distance many throwers would be very pleased with, it was not good enough to medal and somewhat short of Chris's personal best, and school record, of 48' 4" from last week.

State Meet at Penn State: February 26, 2000

For our last Winter Indoor Track Meet we were fortunate enough to have two of our athletes compete. Sara Dougherty and Kate Curran both qualified for the PTF&FCA State Championship Meet at Penn State. In the running events Kate represented Springfield well, running the mile in a personal best time of 5:27.31 -- 7 seconds faster than her previous best. Over in the field events Sara was entered in the pole vault. Sara vaulted well enough to take the 6th place medal with a vault of 9' 6".
