The Constitution mentions 15 languages as languages of India. Each language has its own literature, comprising great novels, drama and poetry. It is indeed these differences that make India an interesting country. India has over 1600 languages and dialects. Most languages belong to the Indo-Aryan group, which have descended from Sanskrit. The Indo-Aryan languages include Assamese, Bengali, Gujarathi, Hindi, Kashmiri, Konknni, Marathi, Oriya, Punjabi, Sindhi and Urdu.

Another set of languages belong to the Dravidian family. They are Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu. They are the languages spoken by the people of South India. Apart from these, India also has tribal communities, with distinct language and culture. All communities have their own culture, rooted from their language. All languages have their literature.
