Once there was a fire within this heart
That burned with the flame of youth
Once there was the gleam of hope in these eyes
As I set out in search of the truth

Once I looked for the good in life
Once I was a lover of all that was old and new
Once I saw things others missed
Once I believed that there was nothing I could not do

Once I looked forward to each new day
Once I had faith in my fellow human kind
Once I believed that given enough time
The human race, its destiny would someday find
 
Once my heart was full of hope
Once I thought there was more good, than ill will
Once I believed that at heart mankind was good
After all these years, I believe that still

Once was oh so very long ago
But now it is today
The fire still burns there after all this time
And I know it shall always be that way
