End of Life

The lights go out in the firmament,
The earth and its foul contents
Ceases to be ... Now all is dark
For nowhere does a light spark.

The end has come at long last,
As predicted in ages past,
And everywhere life ceases to be;
Never again shall we hear or see.

For the Gods, at that very moment,
Decided to withdraw their consent
That we would carry on as before,
But all should cease for ever more.

And foolish man, who was so sure
That he could do all and all endure,
Realized that, but then too late,
Nothing prevails against fate.

Now all is gone, there's no more light;
The Gods, engulfed in endless night,
Ponder where they did go wrong
And why they kept it for so long.

And when they realize their mistake,
Perhaps then they'll try and make
New life ... the quality of which
Will be pure, faultless, and rich.

Empangeni, 1987.
