WG Finlay DD

As far as WG Finlay knows
There is such a thing as God
But the way he presents his case
Strikes me as being quite odd.

I read the book that he wrote
With the title "OUT OF TOMORROW",
I studied each single page
With interest, but also sorrow.

Interest for his new approach
Which is indeed most radical
For if what is written is true
What future awaits us all?

Sorrow, for in all his words
No hope seems forthcoming,
And human hearts are known to long
To hear words that are comforting.

So there is a God! Big deal!
But what has He done or said?
If all the records are suspect
Who can say if He's good or bad?

And how do all of us fit in
His master scheme of things?
Or is He perhaps a product
Of what the imagination brings?

And those who, throughout the ages,
Kept the faith and always thought
That what the Bible said was true,
Yet was fake, and thus count for nought.

According to Finlay's theory
Abram, Moses, Jacob and sons
Probably didn't exist at all,
Or they were not the Bible's ones.

As for the Jesus of the Book
The record is confusing; you see,
The writers got him confused
With the one who lived B.C.

And so, with the stroke of a pen
He's dashed my expectation
That after life on this planet
There would be a resurrection.

Though I must now freely admit
That this idea of just dying,
And not wake up ever again
Is not to me all that worrying.

For it means that everyone else
Will end in the same way as me:
Six feet under and in the end
Just plain compost for one more tree.

But it would have been nice to see,
Somewhere in this book that he wrote,
A few positive thoughts, which would
Give the readers a ray of hope.

Empangeni, 1990.
