Tax Concessions

(on a financial red herring -  November, 1986)

They say the country is broke
And whisper. "There is no money",
So concessions such as these
Strikes me as being quite funny.

As all experts will tell us,
When a country runs aground
There is no way it can afford
To throw any money around.

But all of a sudden this law,
World wide as it may be,
Doesn't apply to South Africa
Who, we're told, is on its knee.

It all sounds rather confusing
But if what I think is true,
We live in an economic world
More far fetched than Xanadu.

But take a good look at them
And soon you'll clearly see
That they where never intended
To benefit you or me.

So it was to be expected
That most will go to industry;
With their 'perks tax' down
The rich laugh with glee.

And if you're waiting for March
For your lot to improve,
Remember that the next Budget
Your prognosis may disprove.

Empangeni, 1985.
