Thursday 17 July 2003: 10:30-12:30, 11th Floor seminar room Dr. Ian Chalmers (Curtin University of Technology, Perth) gave a talk entitled "The Dayak Resurgence and Ethnic Politics in Central Kalimantan" followed by discussion. For general reading, participants looked at the following text, the first chapter of a book by Prof. Michael Mann (UCLA) that will appear next year: The Dark-Side of Democracy: Explaining Ethnic Cleansing. Cambridge University Press, 2004. (Chapter 1: The Argument). From the description: "A comparative and historical study of murderous ethnic cleansing through history and during colonial times in America, Australia and South-West Africa, followed by detailed case-studies of Armenia, Nazi Germany, three communist regimes (Stalin, Mao and the Khmer Rouge), Rwanda, Yugoslavia, India and Indonesia."
