Bait Drifting
The different approaches
What I've learned is that local method and knowledge are still
the best. Listen to them.... do not be too smart, like I was.
My personal line of action now is to put the local and
imported knowledge to make fishing more interesting and
successful.

In Malaysia, this term usually
means drifting out a live-bait from a stationary boat.
In some other countries, it could mean fishing from a
drifting boat. Since we are talking about fishing in
Malaysia, we'll stick to our local meaning, i.e.,
drifting out a live-bait or even dead bait.
Generally, the accepted idea is
that live baits are better than dead baits. There are
times when this may not be easily achieved. Selars,
kembongs and tambans may not be easily available while
tongkols are boiling everywhere and they are not the
easiest of bait to keep alive. Do not despair. Many a
marlin and sailfish have been caught on dead tongkols.
Barracudas and tenggiris too have fallen for the dead
tongkol.
Let us take a look at the different
methods used for rigging live baits for drifting. Do
bear in mind that the same method may be used for
trolling live bait as well and the bridling
method is still the best if marlin or sailfish is the intended
fish. For other fishes, we'll have a look at how the locals do it.
