When to fish for them:
Trolling with fish bait and skirts are common practice and drifting live
bait or squid produce results. However, in the water around Pulau Aur
and Pulau Dayang off Peninsula Malaysia’s east coast, fish attracting
devices (Unjang) made of bamboo and palm fronds are placed in the sea by
local fishermen to attract schooling bait fish. It is around these
devices that Marlin fishing is best. Marlin makes spectacular runs and
leaps when hooked.

Where to fish for them:
The South China Sea
is believed to be part of the Black Marlin migratory route. A pelagic
fish roaming the Pacific and Indian oceans, the Marlin appears regularly
along deep-water coastlines and around oceanic islands. They can be
taken from March to October. However, the best period is June to
September.
Pulau Aur, Pulau Dayang, Pulau Pemanggil, Pulau Tioman, Labuan and Mabul
are still consider the best fishing spot for this game fish.

Fighting tactics:
When a marlin took on
your bait set your drag on the first run you only strike hard on the
second run because the marlin has no teeth it need time to swallow the
bait. On hookup it
reacts as though it is trying to break the Olympic 100m sprint record.
And always taking to the air with breathtaking heights. It accompanies this
strategy together with fast surface runs. Wire leader is necessary when
targeting marlin. Use
medium to heavy tackle if possible
medium tackle to enjoy the
Tug of Wall fight with the fish. It is advisable not to fight any big
fish for too long they will ware you out.
