Early History
The elves and dwarves originally dominated Aiea. There are various myths to how these two races and humanity came to be, as well as radical scientific theories, but there are numerous books on this subject alone. The dwarves ruled the mountains while the Nine Elvan Races controlled virtually everything else. Humanity developed without much contact with either race, as humans were deemed to be inferior and not worth bothering with.
The elves' culture was based around perpetual war with other elvan clans and their religions. Each  Elvan Race had its own patron goddess, who granted her followers with certain magical powers. It was because of this magic that the elves stayed the dominant race for millennia.

The Order of the Dark Gods
This changed when one day the elves lost their control over magic and the ability to communicate with their goddesses. This  led to a complete breakdown of elvan society, which has since reduced the species to a husk of its former self.
In the meantime, a cult of humans discovered they suddenly had the power to summon, create and control monsters. At first this was limited to opening gateways to other dimensions and communicating with demons, but soon the cultists learned how to take ghost-like spirits called Elementals and combine them to form various creatures.
The cult grew, gaining and forcing other magic-users to join, until it became a massive army of those gifted with magic and their dutiful followers. They were called the Order of the Dark Gods, or simply the Order. They began a massive conquest of Alalsil, forcing the dwarves and elves off of "human land." Backed by endless hordes of creatures that defied nature, the Order easily seized control.
But what had started as a human supremisist movement soon changed. The Order's wizards declared themselves to the chosen of their patron Dark Gods, and that the magicless were inferior. People without magic were herded into massive cities called Dungeons and put into a lifetime of slavery and service to their wizard masters. This was the way of life for a thousand years.
