Feature
is journalism's grab bag. It can be
about anything under the sun -- even the sun itself. The feature can
be as light and fluffy as a cream puff or as solid and substantial
as a rib roast. A feature story is creative sometimes subjective, article designed primarily to entertain and to inform readers of an event, a situation or an aspect in life. The feature story is often not perishable -- it can be held for days or weeks before being printed. It has no established limits of length. It allows for descriptive and stylish techniques that are banned from news writing, and it may not have any news value. A basic difference between straight news story and the feature is that, whereas, the news story informs us, the feature is usually intended to entertain us. The news story has immediacy and must be used right away, whereas the feature has currency and can be used almost any time. Some features are explanatory, intended to expand a subject. Another distinctive mark of the feature is its style. The straight news is just that, a straightforward account of an event. The characteristic may well be its trademark. |
