Diagram of 20 GAL Fry Tank and Filter
This is a diagram of the 29 gallon aquarium referred to in the "FRY LOG". Baby Jack Dempseys were born and being raised in this aquarium with both parents. I hope this diagram answers most all of the questions that I've been receiving asking what type of filtration I have for this tank. The filter is overkill for a standard 29 gallon aquarium population but for large Jack Dempseys with fry, it's barely keeping up.

The filter is a two compartment glass container that is 18" tall and 5" wide. The filtration compartment is first stuffed with bio-cubes and then covered with a 2" layer of polyester filter material and then on top of that I've placed Blue filter padding. One large siphon tube feeds this area. The water drains down into the bottom area where a 100 watt heater is housed out of the way. Water then flows out from under the bio-cubes and into the pumping chamber where two small pumps (140 GPH each) pump the filtered water back into the aquarium. Although not indicated in this diagram, there is an air stone in this pumping chamber just above the pumps so as to not pull tiny air bubbles into the pumps.

CHANGES

THE YOUNG ARE NO LONGER REARED IN THE TANK WITH THE PARENTS.  THE EGGS ARE REMOVED ABOUT 24 HOURS BEFORE THEY HATCH ( about 48 hrs after being laid)  AND PLACED IN A 10 GALLON HATCHERY. THE HATCHERY IS FILTERED WITH A SPONGE FILTER AND A 20% WATER CHANGE DAILY FOR THE FIRST WEEK AND INCREASING TO APPROX. 1/3 DAILY WATER CHANGE AT THE AGE OF 30 DAYS.  AT THIS TIME THE FRY ARE REMOVED FROM THE NURSERY AND MOVED TO LARGER, GROWOUT SYSTEMS.

lay eggs and hatch young in this system.
