TELEVISION APPEARANCES

Pete Hutter, The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.

Pyper is probably best known for his recurring role as Pete Hutter in the late lamented FOX series "The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr." This program aired from August 1993 through May 1994, one blessed season consisting of 27 episodes, seven of which featured Pete. For a listing and short synopsis of the Brisco eps featuring Pete, check out my Only If It Has Pete In It "The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr." episode guide!

The photos above are from The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. episodes 'Stagecoach' 'And Baby Makes 3' and 'High Treason Part One'.

Pyper made his first appearance as Pete in the series' two hour pilot, first air date 8/28/93. Pete Hutter was originally an eccentric hired goon for John Bly (Billy Drago), leader of the notorious John Bly gang, responsible for the death of Brisco Jr.'s esteemed lawman father. (Pete helped Bly escape from Brisco County, Sr. with a Wiley Coyote-esque painted rock which he used to stop the train. He later tried to use the same trick, with much less degree of sucess, on a stagecoach carrying Brisco and an American spy bound for Mexico and a prisoner exchange in the episode "Stagecoach".)

Pete's comically highbrow speech (From Stagecoach: "Wait you stupid rock! Wait you massive sedimentary glacial deposit!") conceals an actual intelligence level somewhat below normal. However, he makes up for what he lacks in brains with an awesome constitution, (rather like a frontier version of Jason from the Friday the 13th movies) which allows him to return again and again to plague Brisco, seemingly after he has been left for dead (From High Treason Part One: Bowler: "We saw you get killed by that Chinese Death Star with our own eyes." Pete: "Well, that's the thing about your Chinese Death Stars, an hour later you're alive again.")

The main thing to remember about Pete is that no one is allowed to touch "Pete's Piece", his prized pistol. (From Stagecoach: "Everybody knows, nobody... touches... Pete's ... Piece!") When Pete's Piece is taken from him, as it frequently is, he completely falls apart.

Pete always greets Brisco the same way: "Hello, Buh-risco."

Heenoc Xian, The Warlord: Battle for the Galaxy

The photos above are from The Warlord: Battle for the Galaxy.

A futuristic sci-fi adventure, "The Warlord: Battle for the Galaxy," was written by best selling novelist Caleb Carr ("The Alienist"). This two-hour movie (the pilot for a proposed series that was never picked up) follows the exploits of renegade swashbuckler Heenoc Xian, (John Pyper - Ferguson) who joins forces with former enemy and fellow adventurer, Justin Thorpe, (John Corbett) to do battle against The Engineers, an alien race seeking to dominate the galaxy and create a universe without families. Thorpe's sister, Nova, had been kidnapped by the Engineers, and the warlord Heenoc Xian agrees to help Thorpe assemble a ragtag crew to set out into the unknown and try to rescue the girl.

What a great ride this movie is! Pyper's portrayal of Xian is just splendid.   Heenoc Xian is a man torn between his basic noblity of character and his darker impulses, and Pyper does a wonderful job of portraying these conflicting emotions.   Xian is a complex, three dimentional character, and it would have been a real pleasure to see what Pyper could have done with this role if it had indeed been picked up as a series.
