Chapter One

BASIC TACKLE REQUIREMENTS

You don't really need much to start in the fishing game, just a rod, a spinning reel, some line and terminal tackle (Don't forget the bait).
After a while one can start collecting all the other odds and ends, (Folding chair, rod rests, tackle box(s), etc) and then graduate to the 4 x 4 and boat.

When one thinks back, many of us started with just the "Gokwe Graphite" and a bent pin, along with the can of worms or bits of bread/dough and did it all on a bicycle.
(I suppose some can remember all the funny insects we tried as well)

For most beginning junior anglers, a simple rod is sufficient to begin with, and a cheap cost effective reel to hold the line. No specialist equipment is necessary.

When we say cheap we don't mean the $125.00 pack that will break down after two or three days use, or just collapse on that first lucky "Giant" of a fish, but something that will last a year or two reliably, whilst they are learning.

It is important though to ensure that the line and terminal tackle is right for the species you are going to endeavour to catch.

Also of some importance is the time in the teaching of the knowledge to be able to use the tackle, especially to the younger anglers. They do appreciate being able to cast and reel in etc without having the interference of "Dad", as they really do want to do it on their own.

The time spent teaching them how to use it and do it all properly, is well worth the effort, as it actually allows you time to do a bit of fishing as well.

If one has more than one "fishing child", then tackle can be passed on down the line, as the others grow out of the initial equipment and get more proficient.
